Nigeria may experience fuel scarcity in the coming days following the threat issued on Monday by the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
NUPENG has given the Federal Government a two-week strike notice, raising the possibility of fuel scarcity across the country in the coming weeks.
NUPENG members basically control the downstream arm of the oil sector and an industrial action by the union would ground the supply and distribution of petrol nationwide.
Citing the need to attend to oil workers’ welfare, NUPENG said it would begin the proposed strike at the expiration of the notice.

The development came via a statement signed by NUPENG President, Williams Akhoreha, and General Secretary, Olawale Afolabi.
The union had reached its decision during a special national delegates conference convened on last Thursday.
It listed non-payment of workers’ salaries, title benefits, among others, as reasons for its resolution.
The resolution read in part, “We write to convey to the general public and all relevant government agencies the resolution of the special national delegates conference to issue a 14-day notice of a nationwide industrial action if some legitimate welfare and membership related issues that have been variously resolved in our favour even by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment are not adequately and conclusively addressed and resolved within the next 14 days. This ultimatum takes effect from Monday, November 15, 2021.”
Outlining some of the issues, the union said the first one was the outstanding short payment of terminal benefits to it members that were declared redundant in 2012 by the management of Chevron Nigeria limited.
It also accused the management of Chevron for terminating the employment of contract workers because the employees consented to join the union.
This, it said, was despite the fact that the workers had put in between 10 to 20 years in continuous employment and that their jobs were terminated without payment of terminal benefits.
“There is also the matter concerning PYRAMIDT workers, who for more than 20 years now are being moved from one labour contractor to another without conditions of service and union representation/recognition,” the union stated.
It added that contract workers working in Oil Mining Lease 42 of the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company, a subsidiary of NNPC, were being continuously owed salaries and allowances for upwards of eight to 10 months.
NUPENG said efforts to make the management of the NPDC and the contractors do the needful on the pitiable plights of the hapless workers had yet to receive any meaningful attention and actions.
It also indicted the Nigeria Agip Oil Company and its contractors for owing contract workers’ salaries and allowances for upwards of 10 months.
Officials of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources and NNPC told The Punch correspondent that the cut down in the number of contract workers, especially at NPDC, was part of the ongoing reforms as contained in the recent Petroleum Industry Act.

Matthew Ashimolowo Appoints Son As UK Resident Pastor, Hints At ‘Retirement’
Founder of the Kingsway International Christian Centre, Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, has appointed his first son, Tobi Ashimolowo, as Resident Pastor 2 of the KICC in London.
This is as he briefly hinted at his own ‘retirement’.
Tobi will be assisting his mother, Yemisi Ashimolowo, who has been the resident pastor at the church for a long time.
A video posted on the Facebook Page of a Christian platform, Church Gist, on Sunday, showed Ashimolowo making the announcement to the excitement of the congregation.
In the video, Ashimolowo said, “In a very major way from this morning, we will no longer have one resident pastor. Yemisi has always been our resident pastor, so she will be Resident Pastor 1. Our new resident pastor is Pastor Tobi Ashimolowo. So, he is our Resident Pastor 2, he has to take some serious responsibility from now on. These guys are retiring their father.”
He prayed that his son will be anointed and favoured by God, and that God will use him to draw his own generation to God, and to shake systems.
Tobi is one of Ashimolowo’s two sons. He founded the Vault, a high-end store for men’s wear and accessories.
The KICC is a Pentecostal church which has branches in Europe, America, Africa including Nigeria. It started in North London in 1992 by Reverend Matthew Ashimolowo.
According to the KICC website, the church is “the largest growing church in Western Europe”. The church claims that it builds its members by investing in “the socio-economic and spiritual needs of multi-cultural communities and our overall desire and commitment to live our lives based on the teachings of Jesus Christ”.
Nigeria vs Tunisia: NFF Under ‘Fire’ Over Buhari’s Video Conference With Super Eagles
The Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, has come under fire for allowing President Muhammadu Buhari to address the Super Eagles.
Buhari had addressed the Super Eagles of Nigeria via a video conference, ahead of their match against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.
The Super Eagles will today tackle Tunisia in a knockout stage match at 8pm in the ongoing African Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cameroon.
The President spoke with Coach Augustine Eguavoen, Captain Ahmed Musa , Amaju Pinnick, NFF President, and others
Mentioning two of the players, Kelechi Iheanacho and Moses Simon, President Buhari urged the Super Eagles to continue making Nigerians happy, not only by winning the second round match, but to eventually lift the trophy.
Reacting, former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, wondered why NFF allowed Buhari speak with the Super Eagles before an important match.
The socio-political activist recounted how Buhari spoke with Anthony Joshua and Eagles in the last AFCON, and they all lost their matches.
In a tweet, Omokri wrote: “Oh oh! Why did NFF allow Buhari speak with the Super Eagles players now! What is wrong with NFF?
“Have the forgotten what happened after he spoke to Anthony Joshua? Or Eagles in the last AFCON? Please we want to win. This nonsense must not repeat itself!”
