NYG :Edo Table Tennis Trio Moves To Next Rounds

The Edo trio of Azeta Eromosele, Aleoba Emmanuel and Sunday Esther, have qualified for the next round of the table tennis events after winning their groups stage matches respectively at the ongoing National Youth Games.

In the male category, Eromosele outclassed his counterparts from Kwara and Akwa Ibom states in two straight sets, while Aleobua Emmanuel defeated his Ondo counterpart in two straight sets before walking over his Nasarawa opponent to book a spot in the next round of the competition.

Faleye Deborah, lost 2-1 to her Enugu counter, while her remaining match was postponed to Sunday morning.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after their games, Eromosele and Emmanuel in their separate remarks expressed gratitude to the state government for the opportunity given to them to participate in the competition.

They promised to approach their next round matches with more seriousness.

Also, Coach Odion Atafo, commended her player Esther, for her performance, despite being new to the competition.

In another development, the Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Yussuf Alli, on Saturday in Asaba disclosed that Edo will continually play by the rules of the NYG, informing that the state is not desperate to win medal at all cost.

Alli who was at the Stephen Keshi’s Studiun, Asaba, venue of the NYG opening ceremony to boost the morals of the state athletes, maintained that the state athletes are in high spirits to do Edo proud.

It is a youth games and no course for alarm and we are not trying to win at all cost. They will do their best and I am sure we will be okay”, he said.

He revealed that the athletes were not given targets in terms of medals to be won as they are in Asaba to compete, the aim of the State government is to develop sports through grassroots.

The Edo Sports Commission Chairman, however, bemoaned the screening method of some athletes, adding that the screening officials were out to favour a particular state.

AFCON: Osimhen Sends Message To Super Eagles Fans Globally After Nigeria’s Victory Over Algeria

Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen has shared a heartfelt message to the team’s fans around the globe following Nigeria’s 2-0 triumph against Algeria in the AFCON quarter-finals on Saturday.

Osimhen contributed to the win with a goal, while Akor Adams also found the back of the net, securing Nigeria’s progression to last-4 stage.

In a video posted on X after the match, Osimhen expressed his gratitude to Super Eagles supporters.

The Galatasaray star also noted the difficult nature of the victory and hope Eric Chelle’s side win the tournament in the coming days.

“Hello Super Eagles fans worldwide, thank you for your support. This victory against Algeria wasn’t easy,” Osimhen said (via PoojaMedia).

“I’m happy that the team got the win against Algeria. We’ll continue to build on this momentum, and hopefully, we’ll get to the AFCON final and win the trophy.”

With four goals in the tournament, Osimhen is now just one goal shy of Morocco’s Brahim Diaz.

AFCON: Super Eagles Beat Algeria 2-0, To Play Morocco In Semi-final

Nigeria have qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Super Eagles pulled off a stunning display to beat Algeria 2-0 in their quarter-final clash on Saturday evening, to book their spot.

Eric Chelle’s men dominated the Desert Foxes for most of the first half, but failed to find the back of the net.

The closest Nigeria came to opening the scoring, came when Calvin Bassey’s effort was cleared off the line.

The three-time African champions will now clash with the hosts Morocco for a place in the final.

Some Nigerian football fans have reacted to Super Eagles’ 2-0 win against Algeria in the AFCON quarter-final tie on Saturday.

DAILY POST reports that goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams ensured Nigeria defeated the Desert Foxes.

Reacting, some Nigerians wondered how come the Super Eagles failed to qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following their brilliant display against Algeria.
