Panic As Flood Sacks Osun Community

Following long hours of rainfall on Saturday morning, some parts of Ikire town, the headquarters of Irewole local government area of Osun State have been submerged.

Properties worth millions of Naira were also destroyed as a result of the flood that accompanied the heavy downpour.

Residents disclosed to DAILY POST that the rain started early on Saturday morning around 8am and lasted until afternoon.

Parts of the town affected included Oja-Ale, Atoto, Fulani, Mateba, UNIOSUN Road, Campus area and the popular Naira and Kobo junction along the Ife-Ibadan expressway.

A student of the Osun State University, UNIOSUN, Onigbinde Michael who spoke to DAILY POST in a phone conversation on Saturday said shops, residential houses, farmlands, and livestock were badly affected and that he could not quantify the level of loss.

“More than 100 residents have been affected. In the affected areas of Ikire, you will observe residents scooping water out of their houses and shops.

“Some of them are even trapped in their building with no help in sight. Some even came out and saved some trapped victims from drowning.The case is pathetic.”

Reacting to the flood incident in Ikire on Saturday, the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke directed the Commissioner for Environment to fast-track flood prevention measures.

In a statement signed by his Spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed on Saturday, Adeleke expressed sympathy over the flood disaster.

The governor revealed that the flood wreaked havoc on the western part of the state and assured the people that his administration will address the root cause of the flood, forestall future occurrences and fast-track the state’s flood prevention plan.

“It is touching to learn about the monumental damages that flood has wrecked on homes and livelihoods in Ikire. The scale of the losses suffered by our people as a result of the flood disaster is too heavy especially at a time of economic strain as now,” the Governor said in the statement.

“I want to, on behalf of the State Government, convey heartfelt sympathy to everyone affected in one way or the other. As a government, we stand with the people of Ikire in this difficult moment and assure them of our commitment to support them overcome the challenges posed by the incident.

“My administration has activated emergency measures to rescue people and livelihoods hugely impacted by the flooding. I assure victims of the incident that the government will do all in its capacity to support them.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Environment, Mayowa Adejoorin has revealed that he has directed personnel of the Ministry to quickly find a temporary solution to combat the flood.

In a statement obtained by DAILY POST, Adejoorin said ”in the meantime, I have directed the Permanent Secretary and Director of Flood control to mobilize some personnel to the spot for urgent attention. I want to assure the people of Ikire of our maximum support in combating the flooding.”

Security Operatives Arrest Suspects Involved In Kidnap Of AAUA Officials

Security operatives have arrested three suspected kidnappers allegedly involved in the abduction of two senior officials of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko AAUA, Ondo State, a few days ago.

The suspects were nabbed a few hours after the release of Omoniyi Eleyinmi, the faculty officer of the institution’s Faculty of Education, who was said to have paid an undisclosed ransom prior to his freedom.

Eleyinmi was abducted alongside a staff of the university last Monday at his residence at Supare Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area of the state.

Following his abduction, the suspected kidnappers initially demanded the payment of N100 million but was later reduced to N7 million ransom.

Sources revealed that the kidnappers were nabbed in a forest within the axis of Oba Akoko and Owo following intel received by detectives in the state.

While confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed that the arrested suspects are currently undergoing interrogation.

“I can confirm to you that our operatives arrested three suspected kidnappers in connection with the kidnapping of 2 AAUA lecturer.

Unregistered Tanker Loaded With 15,000 Litres Of AGO Tumbles In Oyo

A tanker without a registration number carrying fifteen thousand litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) has tumbled in Iseyin in Oyo State.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at Odo-Igba, Iseyin – Saki Road in Iseyin, on Sunday.

The tanker was said to have lost control whilst on motion, swerved off the road and fell into a nearby ditch.

The accident reportedly caused a traffic gridlock but the Chairman of Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, who confirmed the incident in a statement said normalcy has been restored on the road.

It was a trailer tanker with unknown registered no loaded with 15,000litres capacity of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), that lost control whilst on motion and swerved off the road into a nearby ditch.

The firemen quickly swung into action and applied chemical foam compound to neutralize the flammability of the content and prevented it from explosion.”

The normal vehicular movement has been restored back on the road”.

Police Arrest Suspected Armed Rubbers, Members Of Kidnapping Syndicate In Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended four suspected members of an armed robbery and kidnapping syndicate.

In a statement issued on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Command said operatives from the Bori Division, while on routine patrol along Nkpee Street, Bori, acted swiftly upon receiving a distress call regarding suspicious activities by unidentified individuals in the area.

According to Iringe-Koko, the suspects arrested are: Solomon Chris (Male, 26 years), Fabulous John (Male, 26 years), Wisdom Kalongo (Male, 30 years), and Wisdom Samuel (Male, 33 years).

Items recovered from the suspects include “one locally-made revolver pistol, one live ammunition, quantity of hard drugs (loud), criminal charms, one ash-coloured Toyota Sienna vehicle, Registration No. BNY-758FS.”

The statement further noted that the fleeing members of the syndicate are currently being tracked for arrest, while investigations are ongoing to recover additional operational weapons.

It noted that updates will be communicated to the public in due course.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents and urged members of the public to “continue to provide timely and useful information to the police.”
