Police Ban Use Of Local Security Outfits, VIP Escorts On Election Day In Imo

The Nigeria Police has banned all private and local security outfits in Imo State, from participating in Election Security Management.

The directive according to the Imo police authority is from the office of the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba.

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Ahmed Barde gave the directive in a statement signed by ASP Henry Okoye and made available to DAILY POST in Owerri, Imo State.

The CP also ordered the strict enforcement of IGP’s directives on the restriction of all forms of vehicular movement and transportation across the 27 LGAs of the state, from 12 midnight to 6pm on Saturday 25th February 2023 scheduled for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections, except for essential duty officers such as the INEC Officials, Electoral Observers, Fire Fighters and Ambulances responding to medical emergencies, etc.

The Statement reads, “Furthermore, on election day, no security agents or escorts should accompany their bosses or elected officials to voting places and counting facilities.

“The prohibition on the use of sirens, rotating lights, covered license plates, and tinted glass is still in effect, and offenders will be subject to legal repercussions. Imo State has issued a warning to private and local security organizations that they are not permitted to participate in election security management, telling them to stay away from polling places and collation centres.

These instructions are a component of the security precautions the command has put in place to ensure the conduct of an election that is secure, free, fair, credible, and acceptable.

“The CP beckons the electorates not to put on political party campaign vest or regalia to polling unit or collation center and craves the indulgence of Imolites to comply with the directives that are emplaced to assist the security agencies in preventing criminally minded persons from disrupting the electoral process as it may be inconvenient.

“They should also avoid spreading misleading information, purchasing votes, stealing ballots, and using derogatory language that can incite violence.

“To provide adequate security during the elections and beyond, CP Barde reiterates the Command’s preparedness to collaborate with other sister security services. He urged all eligible voters in the state to cast their ballots in large numbers, and he issued a warning that the command would arrest and prosecute anyone who attempted to tamper with the election. He requests that the good citizens of the state call the Command Emergency line at 08034773600 or 08098880197 to report any suspicious individual, an unusual event, or request for security reaction.”

Indian Court Denies Bail To Nigerian Man Over Drug Charges

A court in India has denied bail to a 44-year-old Nigerian national, Cristian Soporuchukwu, who is currently facing drug trafficking charges in the country.

Cristian Soporuchukwu initially entered India on a business visa but was later arrested over allegations of involvement in the sale of hard drugs.

Reports indicated that after arriving in India, Soporuchukwu travelled through Goa, Delhi, and Mumbai, where he allegedly established links with suspected drug traffickers.

He was accused of purchasing MDMA crystals and distributing them to college students and information technology workers.

According to reports, operatives of the Beguru Police arrested Cristian Soporuchukwu in April 2025 for allegedly selling MDMA crystals around Begur Lake and the AECS Layout Road area.

The New Indian Express reported that the High Court of Karnataka subsequently dismissed the Nigerian’s bail application.

“The anti-narcotics wing seized about 1 kg of MDMA crystals, a pocket weighing machine, 10 zip-lock covers, a mobile phone and a scooter from him,” the report stated.

Justice V. Srishananda, while ruling on the bail application, reportedly held that errors relating to the grounds of arrest could not automatically justify bail in serious narcotics-related offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, NDPS, Act.

The court further noted that Cristian Soporuchukwu had allegedly overstayed his visa in India, according to the report.

Strait Of Hormuz: US Announces Sanctions Against Iran

The United States Treasury has announced sanctions against Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority.

Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, said this in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement extended the threat of sanctions to anyone paying the fees, saying they may be providing support to and receiving services from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, and therefore may be exposed to sanctions risk.

“The Iranian military’s latest attempt to extort global maritime trade is proof that Economic Fury has left the regime desperate for cash.

Bessent added that the US has succeeded in disrupting tens of billions of dollars’ worth of revenue from being accessible to Tehran.

US Launches New Airstrikes On Iran

The United States has launched new airstrikes in southern Iran.

The strike shot down four one-way attack drones that posed a threat around the Strait of Hormuz and then a ground control site.

A US official revealed that American forces struck an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was about to launch a fifth drone.

The official described the strikes as purely defensive, saying the US intended to maintain the ceasefire.

Recall that on Monday the US carried out airstrikes against Iranian missile locations and boats that US Central Command said were preparing to launch mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
