Political Parties Renting Crowds For Rallies – Adeboye

Published

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has accused political parties of hiring crowd to attend their rallies.

The renowned cleric made this known in a sermon during the RCCG January Holy Ghost Service on Friday.

I watch it in the news. If human beings promote you, oh, I don’t know whether I should say this. I’m sure you have been watching the campaign rallies, I watch it on the news. I don’t know if you have noticed that two different people don’t hold their campaign simultaneously in a town.

“Have you noticed that? You don’t know why? Because majority of the crowd, majority are rented. So I come, I pay, you gather. After I’ve gone, another man comes, he pays, you gather.”

He added, “Somebody said, “Daddy, you keep on saying that you haven’t heard from God about who will win or who will…’ Maybe because there are several things occupying my mind and one of it is; when I see the crowd gathering and if you look at the crowd majority of them are young.

“When I see the hundreds of thousands of youths, you have to be jobless to be attending all these rallies. What is going to happen when the campaigns are over?”

Adeboye had also hinted that God had not spoken to him yet on the winner of the next President of the country in the forthcoming 2023 polls.

You may be saying the election is next month and He has not spoken until now. I advise that you get your PVCs ready.

“If He doesn’t speak before the elections, then be ready to vote as your spirit leads. If He tells me, well, I may tell you or I may not,” he said.

The statement is, however, silent about the fate of the state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, who also reportedly emerged candidate in a parallel primary held on the same day.

Idahosa kicks against Apapa’s action

The last is yet to be seen of the unfolding drama in the Edo State Labour Party (LP) as Alhaji Lamidi Basiru Apapa faction as two candidates have emerged as governorship candidates for the Edo State governorship election scheduled to hold on September 21, 2024.

This is as the Abure-led faction of the party on Friday, February 23, 2024, declared Olumide Apata as it governorship candidate following the primary election conducted in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

In a parallel election held in Benin City yesterday, Saturday, February 24, Dr Hilton Idahosa, emerged as the winner, with 917 votes.

His closet rival scored 17 votes while the third contender garnered 12 votes.

However, in a twist, Apapa, who was not present during the primary election held yesterday, reportedly wrote a secret letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), dated Thursday February 22, 2024, in which he submitted the names of Barrister Anderson Uwadiae Asemote and Barrister Monday Ojore Mawah as governorship and deputy governorship candidates respectively of the party.

The letter signed by Apapa, as Acting National Chairman, and Alhaji Saleh Lawan, as Acting National Secretary, reads in part: ‘‘We write to submit the names of our candidates that emerged from our governorship primary election conducted today (February 22, 2024) in Benin, Edo State.

‘‘You will recalled that we had earlier notified the Commission about the conduct of our party governorship primary today and we hereby forward the names of our party flag bearer for the September 21, 2024 governorship election.’’

Reacting to this development, Idahosa, who is a United Kingdom-based lawyer, described the purported letter from Apapa as fake.

He explained that the primary election which was earlier slated for Thursday, February 21, 2024, was shifted to Saturday February 24, to allow for exigencies.

According to him, there was no primary election conducted on Friday February 22, as purported in the said letter from Apapa to INEC.

He said that the election in which he emerged as a candidate was conducted by the Labour Party state officials at the secretariat of the party on First East Circular Road, Benin City.

Idahosa noted that the said letter is the handiwork of mischief makers who are bent on causing disaffection within the ranks of the party.

Idahosa further noted that he has the backings of the state leaders and the party members, as well as that of Apapa and his team, disclosing that the true position will be made known in the coming days as his team is in dialogue with both the Apapa team and leaders of the party in the state.

The Edo State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Monday Okpebholo, received his certificate of return from the leadership of the ruling party on Saturday.

Okpebholo beat Dennis Idahosa and 10 other aspirants last Thursday to emerge the party’s candidate in the forthcoming governorship election.

The presentation of certificate comes in the wake of protest and threat of litigation by Idahosa who claimed the re-run poll was a sham, deliberately arranged by the National Working Committee to favour the winner.

The certificate was presented at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja by the National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, who was accompanied by the National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru and some NWC members.

Addressing the media after the presentation, Ganduje expressed optimism that the APC will record overwhelming victory in the September governorship poll in the state.

The party chairman also dismissed insinuation that the contest may have been overturned to favour Okpebholo, adding that he has records and video evidence to back up his claim.

“The full cooperation, harmony and unity of all aspirants and members of our party is all we need now to win Edo in the coming election now that the primary is over.

“The party has a product that is refined, well packaged and sellable to the electorate in the person of Okpebholo and is therefore ready to win Edo,” he appealed.
