Presidential Primaries: Nigerians Go Spiritual As Osinbajo, Atiku, Amaechi, Wike, Others Battle For Tickets

Nigerians have gone spiritual in their desire for good and people-oriented leadership in the country ahead of the 2023 presidential primaries.
By next Monday, it would become clear who will be flying the presidential flags of the two major political parties in the country- the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
The ruling APC and main opposition, the PDP will share a total number of three thousand, one hundred and fifty presidential delegates’ votes combined. The delegates will vote to elect their parties’ flag bearers in Abuja at the weekend.
A total of 3,150 elected ad-hoc delegates will be shared between approximately 39 aspirants from both parties – 2,340 for the APC, with at least 23 aspirants and 810 delegates’ votes for PDP’s 14 aspirants.
They are expected to elect presidential candidates during the indirect primaries and national convention slated Saturday, Sunday and Monday May 28-30th respectively.
The coming weekend will be a decisive one for Nigeria and Nigerians, as they anxiously await the outcome of the elections, especially from the APC presidential primaries scheduled for Sunday and Monday, May 29-30.
The different aspirants from both parties have been at the top of their wits, moving from State to State, ensuring that all loose ends were neatly tidied up.
However, one may not be too far from the truth to say that three leading contenders have emerged from the PDP namely the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

Peter Obi, who was one of the party’s strong contenders for the ticket, dumped the main opposition party on Wednesday.
PDP sold 17 forms to its presidential aspirants and about 14 of them are still in the race after two were disqualified during the screening and Peter Obi’s resignation yesterday.
Popular among those still hoping to grab the party’s sole ticket are Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, former Managing Director of FSB International Bank, Dr. Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, Publisher, Ovation International, Chief Dele Momodu, Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, among others.
For the APC, despite making history by selling the costliest forms in Nigeria’s existence, the party recorded the highest number of buyers in its history.
The APC sold a total of 28 presidential nomination and expression of interest forms amounting to N2.8 billion, to 28 presidential aspirants. Although some of the aspirants dissociated themselves from the forms and denounced the buyers, the party said that only three of those forms were not submitted.
The APC Spokesperson, Felix Morka said that only the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele and the Minister of Petroleum for State, Timipreye Sylva, did not submit their forms.
“For some of them, it’s a bit iffy. What I have this time, we’ve 28 who purchased form and at the last count, we have 25 who made submission.
“But three of them did not. They are Senator Chris Ngige, Godwin Emefiele and then we have Timipre Sylva,” he said.
So, among the presidential aspirants on the APC platform are the national leader of the party, Bola Ahmed Tinubu; former River State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi; Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; former Minister of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio; former Minister of Education for State, Emeka Nwajiuba; former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello; former National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
Others are former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu; former Ogun State governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosu, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Cross River State governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi, Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; Jigawa governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar and former Zamfara State governor, Sen. Ahmed Yerima.

It is worthy of mention that extrapolations based on the actual number of delegates from the two leading political parties have become very difficult and this is due to President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to sign the latest amendment to the Electoral Act.
And as these politicians are set to battle it out for their parties’ presidential ticket this weekend, many Nigerians have said that not again will God allow the sufferings of the past seven years, which, according to them, is as a result of bad leadership, to continue. To some of them, what Nigeria needs at this point is divine intervention.
On the streets of Abuja, the nation’s capital, DAILY POST sought the opinion of Nigerians ahead of the primary elections of the two major political parties.
“My brother, we are now solely depending on God for the best among the numerous politicians contesting the primaries of these two parties. Have you asked yourself why over 40 people are contesting for the position? They want to go there and continue enriching themselves. It’s unfortunate that these two parties are still the ones Nigerians will choose from again in 2023. Some of us were thinking that another party will emerge before this time and silence them but since that’s not the case,, our hopes are now solely on God alone.,” Adewale Adeyunji, a.k.a AA, a commercial taxi driver at Berger Bridge, said, adding that “the current administration has been harsh on me. I don’t know about others but from the way I’m seeing things and the way passengers complain, it seems it’s a general problem. For me, I’ll say anybody that is not Buhari should come. But God will help us.”
John Nwoko, a fashion designer in Utako Market, Abuja, said, “Every Nigerian knows that the past seven years have been terrible. The Buhari government has sent so many people to poverty and some to their early graves. Nigerians are keenly looking forward to how the primaries of the APC and PDP will turn out. Anything short of a good leader now could mean that God is against Nigeria. Killings everyday, hardship to the extent that what we used to call ‘ordinary pure water’ is no longer within the reach of everyone. Since we’re still depending on APC or PDP, God must show us love and produce the best from the rest.” Asked who he thinks is the best, Mr Neoko said, “It’s left for God to decide because the last time we made the decision ourselves, see where we are today.”
DAILY POST understands that this was the view of many traders around Nwoko’s shop as they nodded in agreement as he spoke to our correspondent.
Also speaking, Madan Grace Olaifa, a clothes seller at Wuse Market, who further identified herself as a member of Living Faith Church, said, “I’ve handed it over to God. I believe he knows all things. See, there are some problems you can’t solve as a human being, so those ones you submit them to the will of God. Nigeria is one of those problems. I used to hear that God blessed this country with everything, even human resources, unfortunately for us, no good leaders. As for the APC and PDP primaries, I’m not a politician, what I know is my shop, my family and my God. Things are getting difficult everyday but we believe in God. God will answer our prayers and send us a messiah whether from PDP, APC or any other one. ”
“See, I don’t care who wins in the primaries. For me, what I just want to hear is that this current administration has left office. I just wish they can leave right now even as I’m speaking with you. 2023 is like two hundred years for me. People have suffered. To think that I shouted ‘Jonathan must go,’ ‘Jonathan should go’ in 2015 and then I had two kids and were buying a bag of rice for N7,000 and now my family has increased to five and rice is sold for N32,000. Our currency is valueless. No electricity for those doing business and no fuel at filling stations. People are tired. 2023 is too far. Let them do their primary elections and we pray to God to have mercy on us and give someone who knows that citizens exist,” Jude Amakwe, a trader at AMAC Market said.

Shibkau Abdul Hafizq, a Pharmacist, said he will no longer put his hope on politicians: “Let them conduct their primaries peacefully so that we that are not politicians can have peace in this country. I no longer believe politicians. Never! I remember all the promises made by the current administration but none of them was fulfilled, instead what we see is death and hardship. Truly, my hope is in Allah. Is Allah’s will that will happen be it from APC or PDP, they are the same deceivers. So I think Nigerians should not expect anything from this crop of politicians. See how people are suffering but are those politicians not buying forms for N100 million? They travel from State to State sharing money among themselves. One day, Allah will have mercy and remember Nigeria with a good leader. That’s all I have to say. I don’t care about their primaries and I’m not looking forward to it. If Buhari can fail us, that means you can’t hope on anyone.”

Agege LG Chairman Resigns

Agege Local Government
Mr. Tunde Azeez Disco has stepped down as the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, citing persistent health challenges as the reason for his resignation.
The former chairman submitted his resignation letter to the Agege Local Government Legislative Arm.
He noted that his health status had significantly impacted his ability to effectively discharge his official duties.
The legislative house, while acknowledging Azeez Disco’s dedication to public service, quickly accepted the decision. Following a thorough deliberation, a unanimous resolution was passed, accepting the resignation with immediate effect.

The council wished the outgoing chairman well in his future endeavours, with the event underlining the necessity for public officials to prioritise personal health and well-being.
Ganiyu Obasa, son of the Speaker, Lagos State Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is the Vice chairman of Agege Local Government.
In May, residents of Agege, under the banner of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the local government election in Agege.
They claimed that Obasa allegedly plans to foist his surrogates as candidates in the local government and councillorship elections.

In a meeting held in response to the announcement of candidates for the chairmanship and vice-chairmanship of the Agege Local Government and Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA), the aggrieved residents alleged that those shortlisted as candidates to represent the area were handpicked by Obasa.
They said the process was void of internal democracy and collective participation.
Addressing the media, Kamardeen Sabitu, chairman of the PCC for Agege and Orile-Agege, alleged that Obasa did everything possible to manipulate the political structure in the area for personal gain.
During the protest, demonstrators carried placards reading “Red Card, Obasa O to ge, (it is enough). They also chanted songs such as “Enough is Enough, this suffering is enough, Tinubu, rescue us.”

Sabitu added that the people have endured years of political marginalisation under Obasa’s influence. He recalled that the movement against imposed candidates began in 2018, during which one of the protesters died and 11 others were jailed.
“There is no true democracy in Agege. Since 2018, we’ve been resisting Obasa’s control. We salute everyone standing up to this political imposition. One person cannot dominate Agege politics,” Sabitu said.
He emphasised that while the group remains loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is also appreciative of the party’s leadership, they will not accept candidates imposed on them without proper consultation.

JUST IN: Reps In Rowdy Session, Reject Key Motions

The plenary session of the House of Representatives on Tuesday turned rowdy after members voted against some motions of urgent public importance, which bordered on the protection of lives and key government assets.
With the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, presiding, the session became rowdy, as members dissolved into a closed-door session to restore order.
It all started when the member representing Somolu Federal Constituency, Lagos State, Ademorin Kuye, drew the attention of his colleagues to what he called the illegal allocation of lands within the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex and prayed the House to refer the matter to the Committee on Public Assets for investigation.
Kuye, a member of the All Progressives Congress is the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Assets.

Proposing an amendment to the prayers, Delta lawmaker and Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Francis Waive, argued that though the matter brought before the Green Chamber is urgent enough, the Committee on Commerce, not Public Assets, should be in charge of the investigation.
Waive was supported by Akwa Ibom lawmaker, Mark Esset, who argued that “It is the Committee on Commerce that should take responsibility on this matter.”
On the other hand, Yusuf Gagdi representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency, Plateau State, supported Kuye, stating that the Public Assets Committee should be allowed to take charge of investigating the allegation of illegal land sale and submit a report to the House.
With no end to the back-and-forth argument in sight, Gbefwi Gaza (SDP, Nasarawa) on the advice of Kalu, proposed the constitution of an Ad-hoc Committee comprising members of both Committees (Public Assets and Commerce) to conduct the probe.

When subjected to a voice vote, almost an equal number of lawmakers voted in support and against the motion.
Not sure whose voices were louder, Kalu gave it to the nays, sparking unrest in the chamber.
Next on the order of urgent motions was Mohammed Bio representing Baruten/Kaima Federal Constituency, Kwara State.
Bio who lamented the worsening security situation in his constituency, prayed the House to urge the military to establish a base in the crisis-prone areas to stem the tides of attacks.

This time, more lawmakers voted against the motion, to the surprise of Kalu and the Kwara lawmaker.
It became clear to Kalu that members had resolved to frustrate the day’s session owing to the rejection of Kuye’s motion.
So, when again voices thundered against Ayodeji Alao-Akala’s motion which drew members’ attention to the need to address Nigeria’s description as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the United States President, Mr Donald Trump; Kalu allowed the motion to pass, forcing members to openly oppose the decision.
Voices of dissent rent the chambers and the plenary was suspended for a closed-door session.

Obaseki’s Media Aide Tackles Edo Information Commissioner Over Alleged ₦600bn Debt

A former Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has denied leaving a debt of N600bn, urging the Monday Okpehbolo-led administration to crosscheck from the Debt Management Office (DMO) before “spewing lies.”
The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, had on Monday in Benin claimed that the immediate past administration in the state left a whooping ₦600bn debt.
Reacting to Afegbua’s claim via video call on Tuesday, Obaseki’s Media Adviser, Crusoe Osagie, challenged the current administration in the state to visit the DMO to see whether Edo drew such debt.
Crusoe, who said no government at whatever level has capacity to draw loans or enter into any debt arrangement without the knowledge and approval of the DMO, said lies being spewed by the Okpebholo’s administration is giving the country a bad image.

He said information of such gives the impression that the state is being governed by people who don’t understand what it means to run a government.
Crusoe described the claim as false and outrightly out of place.
On the planned probe of Mosium of West Africa Arts (MOWA), Crusoe noted that MOWA remained an international brand that entered into a business agreement with Edo State with all T’s crossed and all I’s dotted.
He insisted that every record about the transaction between Radisson Hotel and the Edo State government was contained in the transition report.

He said: “MOWA is an international investment drawing funds from the German government, the United Kingdom’s government, and the French government for its development. You think such an investment will be put on a land that was not ceded to that organization by the state.
“These people just come out there and toss all kinds of irresponsible information out there. At the end of the day what happens is that all of these turn around to form the intelligence that gathered out of Nigeria by the international community.
“It makes these countries think that the country is a failed state and the place is not being governed.”
