Seplat Trains, Empowers Edo, Delta Teachers With Tablets To Boost Education

No fewer than 359 teachers and 22 Chief Inspectors of Education (CIEs) drawn from Edo and Delta states benefited from the 5th edition of the Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme (STEP).

The STEP, an initiative of the NEPL/Seplat Energy Joint Venture (JV), is aimed at equipping teachers and Chief Inspector of Education in Edo and Delta states with essential skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

In her address at the launching of the 5th edition, the Director, External Affairs & Social Performance, Seplat Energy, Chioma Afe, said since its inception, STEP has empowered 1,373 individuals, including 1,264 secondary school teachers and 109 Chief Inspectors of Education (CIEs) across Edo, Delta states and host communities.

She noted that the initiative had not only enhanced the quality of education in the states but has also ignited creativity and innovation within classrooms.

Afe added that the continued investment by the NEPL/Seplat JV underscored its unwavering commitment to elevating education in its host states and communities.

“Five years ago, we conducted a thorough assessment of our host communities in Edo and Delta states to identify their most pressing needs.

“Education emerged as the top priority, not only for the children but also for the teachers who are instrumental in shaping the future of the students.

“Through STEP, we are creating a comprehensive educational ecosystem—impacting teachers, students, school infrastructure, and even the Ministries of Education.

“This approach ensures that our investment in education will yield long-lasting benefits for the entire community,” she added.

Afe, who emphasized the comprehensive nature of the programme, noted: “Participating teachers undergo a rigorous four-day workshop covering leadership, digital skills, STEAM, and essential life skills.

“We have provided each teacher with a tablet equipped with the STEP app, granting them access to a wealth of teacher-focused resources from Microsoft, as well as ongoing support from facilitators.

Speaking at the event, Edo State Commissioner for Education, Joan Oviawe, while appreciating Seplat JV for the partnership, said: “Initiatives like STEP are a testament to NEPL/Seplat Energy JV’s deep commitment to the communities in which they operate.”

The Commissioner who was represented by Mr Ojo Akin-Longe, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, added: “NEPL/Seplat Energy JV is playing a crucial role in developing the potential of our children and, by extension, the future of Edo State. We are grateful for their continued support and pledge our full cooperation to ensure the success of this programme.”

The Commissioner, Ministry of Secondary Education, Delta State, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, represented by Deputy Director (Schools), Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education, Mrs Justina Ishaka, echoed these sentiments, praising STEP as a catalyst for educational reform.

“STEP is more than just a training initiative; it represents a comprehensive approach to improving the quality of education in Delta State. Over 500 teachers in our state have already benefited from this programme, and its positive impact will continue to ripple through our communities for years to come.”

Charity Okpue from Ethiope Mixed Secondary School, Sapele, Delta said, “Since joining the STEP programme, I have gained invaluable insights into emotional intelligence and effective classroom management. This training has exceeded my expectations and has provided me with the skills to better handle challenging situations and foster a positive learning environment for my students.”

DSS Issues Warning, Arrests Man For Circulating Fake Recruitment Materials

The Department of State Services (DSS) has disclosed the arrest of one Mr. Eze Ezenwa Benard, who was recently apprehended for circulating fake DSS recruitment past questions and answers on Facebook.

The agency, while warning the public in a statement on Saturday, said the suspect operated through a page known as “Jobs and Education”, where he advertised the fraudulent materials and charged unsuspecting members of the public one thousand naira (N1,000) for access.

The public is hereby cautioned to disregard any materials, as the DSS does not sell or distribute recruitment questions, answers, or examination guides through private individuals or social media pages. Recruitment into the Service, when necessary, follows specialised procedure in accordance with extant laws and due process,” the statement reads.

Continuing, DSS said Ezenwa’s arrest underscores the Service’s determination to safeguard Nigerians from the fraudulent schemes of unpatriotic elements. “Citizens are therefore encouraged to remain vigilant, verify information from official sources and report suspicious recruitment adverts or individuals attempting to extort money under false pretense.”

The agency assured that it will continue to protect the integrity of its recruitment process while ensuring that perpetrators of fraud face the full weight of the law.

Singer Speed Darlington has told President Bola Tinubu that public admiration cannot be bought, warning that only those who received appointments or jobs from the government truly support him.

In a video posted on Saturday, August 23, the singer said, “Everything isn’t about the economy! There is more to leadership than the economy. See as everybody dey call your name, dey complain. Nobody loves you. Na only the ones you gave work, na them love you. Even your own tribe dey complain about you.”

Before You Leave Office, Reform The Police — Speed Darlington Urges Tinubu

Popular controversial singer Speed Darlington has called on President Bola Tinubu to reform the Nigerian Police Force, urging the government to prioritise citizens’ rights alongside economic growth.

In a video posted on Saturday, the entertainer criticised what he described as the police’s systemic human rights violations and oppressive practices.

Mr President, before you leave office, whether you secure a second term or not, try your best to improve Nigeria. Everything isn’t about the economy!

As an Igbo man, the advice I can give you so people will know your name and remember you for something good is to reform the police. Reform the police.

Darlington also recounted his personal ordeal with law enforcement, highlighting the system’s abuse of power.

I was held for two months after the judge had ordered my release. FID held me for two months. According to my lawyer, the Nigerian law gives only 28 days for investigation.

“They held me for two months. What is the extra month for? Because they can. If you give them money, they oppress your enemy. I have experienced it,” he said.
