State Of The Nation: Those Commending Tinubu Are Hypocrites – Cleric

Senior pastor of Awaiting The Second Coming Of Christ Ministries, Adewale Giwa, has described those commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as hypocrites.
Speaking in Akure, while addressing his members, Giwa, said only the enemies of Nigeria would hail President Tinubu at present.
He said, “Those praising the president are gullible enough to believe that selling a litre of petrol at N550 is good for the country where people are surviving without jobs.
“You cannot put something on nothing and expect it to stay there. Where are the refineries that are functioning in Nigeria?

“How many of us can boast that we have jobs that can help us confront these challenges that we face in Nigeria? It is senseless to remove fuel subsidy without alternatives.
“How can you be praising someone who sacked services chiefs and replaced them with officers that he can work with? If you were in his position, won’t you do same? Can you work with those you cannot trust?
“Don’t worry, if president Tinubu does something that can touch the lives of common Nigerians positively, I shall commend him. For now, he needs no commendation.
“Things are getting worse day by day. I hope he finds a lasting solution to the issue of fuel price hike before it’s too late.”
He recall that the President in his inaugural speech after swearing in, the president completed the removal of the fuel subsidy.

“Presently, fuel price has jumped to between N500 and N550 per litre from N187 pre-May 29.
“Despite its oil riches, Nigeria is unable to refine crude locally to meet demands.
“The four state-owned refineries are moribund, forcing the country to import refined petroleum products which are then sold at a price fixed by the government.”
He added that “President Tinubu also signed the Electricity Bill and Students’ Loans Bill into law, and also sacked security chiefs and replaced them with officers drawn from many geo-political zones of the country and religious affiliations.”

Israel Begins Ground Offensive In Gaza Despite International Criticism

Israel launched its long-anticipated ground assault on Gaza City before dawn on Tuesday, shortly after visiting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio backed its goal of eradicating Hamas in Gaza.
A United Nations probe, meanwhile, charged Israel with committing “genocide” in the Palestinian territory and accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials of incitement.
The assault drew widespread condemnation, with the UN rights chief demanding an end to the “carnage”.
During the night, the military unleashed a massive bombardment of Gaza City as Israeli troops moved deeper into the territory’s largest urban hub.
“Last night, we transitioned into the next phase, the main phase of the plan for Gaza City… Forces have expanded ground activity into Hamas’s main stronghold in Gaza, which is Gaza City,” a military official told journalists.
“We are moving towards the centre” of Gaza City, he said.
The military estimated there were 2,000-3,000 Hamas militants operating in the area, he added.

Defence Minister Israel Katz earlier said Gaza City was “on fire”. “The IDF (Israeli military) is striking terrorist infrastructure with an iron fist,” he said.
The military estimated that about “40 per cent” of Gaza City residents had left and moved to the territory’s south, the military official said.
Witnesses told AFP of relentless bombing in Gaza City, much of which is already in ruins after nearly two years of Israeli strikes.
Only huge piles of rubble remained of a residential block in the north of the city, hit by overnight bombing.
“Why kill children sleeping safely like that, turning them into body parts?” said Abu Abd Zaquout.
“We pulled the children out in pieces.”
– ‘Genocide’ –
Gaza’s civil defence agency said at least 36 people had been killed by Israeli fire on Tuesday.
Media restrictions in the territory and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the details provided by the civil defence agency or the Israeli military.
The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry (COI), which does not speak for the world body, found that “genocide is occurring in Gaza and is continuing to occur”, commission chief Navi Pillay told AFP.

“The responsibility lies with the State of Israel.”
The investigators said explicit statements by Israeli civilian and military authorities, along with the pattern of Israeli forces’ conduct, “indicated that the genocidal acts were committed with intent to destroy… Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as a group”.
The report concluded that Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and former defence minister Yoav Gallant have “incited the commission of genocide”.
Israel said it “categorically rejects this distorted and false report” and called for the “immediate abolition” of the COI.
UN rights chief Volker Turk told AFP and Reuters that: “It’s for the court to decide whether it’s genocide or not, and we see the evidence mounting.”
The European Union said the ground assault on Gaza City would worsen an already “catastrophic” humanitarian situation, while Britain said it would bring only “more bloodshed, kill more innocent civilians and endanger the remaining hostages”.
– Statehood push –
Despite the mounting criticism, Rubio on Monday offered robust backing for the offensive as he met Netanyahu.
“We think we have a very short window of time in which a deal can happen. We don’t have months anymore, and we probably have days and maybe a few weeks to go,” he told reporters as he left Israel.
Rubio said a diplomatic solution in which Hamas demilitarises remained the US preference, although he added: “Sometimes when you’re dealing with a group of savages like Hamas, that’s not possible, but we hope it can happen.”

Before flying out to Qatar, the top US diplomat said he hoped the US ally would keep up its Gaza mediation efforts, despite Israel carrying out air strikes against Hamas leaders gathered in the Gulf country last week to consider a US truce proposal.
“We want them to know that if there’s any country in the world that could help end this through a negotiation, it’s Qatar,” Rubio said.
Rubio’s visit came a week before France was set to lead a UN summit in which several Western governments, angered by what they see as Israeli intransigence, plan to recognise a Palestinian state.
Rubio called statehood recognition “largely symbolic”, while Netanyahu — whose government is fervently opposed to such a move — said his country may take unspecified “unilateral steps” in response.
The October 2023 attack by Hamas resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures.
Israel’s retaliatory campaign in Gaza has killed at least 64,964 people, also mostly civilians, according to figures from the territory’s health ministry that the United Nations considers reliable.

Deputy governor of Edo State, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, on Tuesday, urged the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), to go into deep research, and channelled scientific findings to boost public health.
Idahosa also urged the scientists to set up a vaccine manufacturing company in Edo State.
The deputy governor spoke when he played host to the state chapter of AMLSN, saying “as we speak, we still do not have a vaccine manufacturing company or industry in the whole of Nigeria. That, to me, is worrisome.”

Idahosa, who hosted the scientists on behalf of Governor Monday Okpebholo, added: ” This is the heartbeat of the nation. I think we should roll up our sleeves and do what other states in this country have not done before. Let Edo be the beginner.”
He appreciated the laboratory scientists on the courtesy visit, just as he commended them for their contributions and medical interventions, which he said had given a boost to the public health sector delivery system in the state.
Making reference to the campaign manifesto and five point SHINE Agenda of Okpebholo, Idahosa affirmed that, “after security, health is number two. We are laying so much emphasis on health. Edo State is going to be happy with what we are going to do with the health sector.”

Idahosa assured the scientists that he was going to work closely with “the think tanks in the health sector based on raised areas of needs,” as “government would look at the best way to proffer solution to some of these challenges.”
State Chairman of the AMLSN, Dr. Ekhaguere Ehigie who earlier congratulated the Edo State Government for victories at the polls and in court, highlighted issues that plagued laboratory practice in Nigeria.
He advocated the setting up of modern molecular laboratories and use of Nano technology to boost disease diagnosis, accurate laboratory results and monitoring/surveillance of public health.

The Nigeria Customs Service has issued detailed guidelines to shortlisted candidates ahead of its computer-based test for the ongoing recruitment exercise.
This was contained in a statement obtained by The PUNCH on Tuesday.
The service emphasised that the CBT would be strictly monitored and advised candidates to take note of all instructions to avoid disqualification.
According to the NCS, here are 10 key things applicants must know
1. Test will be online
The service explained that the CBT would be conducted virtually, allowing candidates to write the exam from any location as long as there is reliable internet access. It added that those without personal devices could make use of internet-enabled computer centres.

2. Mobile phones not allowed
Applicants were warned against attempting to use mobile phones for the exam, as the platform does not support such devices. Only laptops and desktops that have webcam capability and allow full-screen display will be accepted.
3. Facial verification required
The NCS stated that a mandatory facial recognition process would be carried out during login. Candidates were urged to prepare accordingly, as their faces must match the details already provided during registration.
4. Avoid untidy appearance
The mail advised applicants to ensure their facial presentation is clear and uncluttered, stressing that “clumsy facial looks” might hinder the smooth operation of the verification system.
5. Sensitive to noise and movement
The CBT application is programmed to detect unusual behaviour. Candidates were cautioned to sit still and maintain focus throughout the test. The system, it warned, could log out those who make excessive body movements or create noise.

6. No distractions allowed
Beyond movements, the service also warned against writing the exam in noisy environments. It explained that whispering or background disturbances may be picked up by the system and interpreted as malpractice.
7. One window at a time
Applicants must remain on a single screen throughout the exam. Switching from one window to another, even briefly, could be flagged by the application as an attempt to cheat.
8. Pre-test before main exam
To familiarise candidates with the system, the service said there would be a compulsory practice session two days before the actual test. This, it added, would enable applicants to understand how the application works and reduce errors on the exam day.
9. Two links for candidates
The NCS explained that applicants would receive two separate links: one to access the pre-test and another for the main CBT on a different date. It urged candidates to use the correct link on the assigned day.

10. Extra test for Superintendent cadre
The mail noted that those who applied for the Superintendent cadre (Level 8) would undertake an additional CBT in the next phase of the recruitment. However, this requirement does not apply to candidates seeking positions in the Inspectorate and Customs Assistant cadres.
The service said that applicants who scale through all stages would be invited for a final screening.
According to The PUNCH, 286,697 candidates were shortlisted for the CBT stage, with the NCS directing all applicants to validate their email addresses as part of the process.
