Super Eagles Coach, Finidi George Under Fire After Shock Defeat To Benin

The Super Eagles’ 2-1 defeat to Benin in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Monday has sparked a wave of criticism directed at the head coach, Finidi George, with fans questioning his tactics and player selection.
The loss, which saw Nigeria fall behind Benin and South Africa in their qualifying group, has left the team’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup hanging.
Reacting to the disappointing result, DISTINGUISHED KPMG LinkedIn Everest @novieverest via X urged fans to remain positive, saying, “Instead of spoiling the image of the Super Eagles just because you don’t like Coach Finidi George, why not pray for the Super Eagles? Learn to be positive and pray.”

However, many others were less forgiving, with Alabi @the_Lawrenz lambasting the decision to appoint George, whose “only managerial experience was Enyimba FC.”
Alabi wrote, “We are not serious as a country… Super Eagles will miss yet another World Cup. I’m tired.”
JUST KINGS @JustKingss went a step further, stating, “Finidi George will probably go down as the worst Nigerian Coach ever.”
The defeat was particularly difficult to swallow for some, given Nigeria’s recent history against Benin.
SportsDokita (Odogwu) @Sports_Doctor2 pointed out, “We lost to Benin Republic on a NEUTRAL ground in Ivory Coast managed by our former coach Rohr. Omoh Finidi George this one is hard to take oooh, it’s a very bitter pill to swallow.”

Omo Kogi (Yagba) @Oladapomikky1 expressed disappointment at the squandered opportunity for Nigeria’s “golden generation of attackers” to experience the World Cup, saying, “In a group, where we have Benin, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria, they are lying 5th… Finidi George no try at all.”
The criticism extended to George’s team selection and tactics, with Frank The Writer @FrankWriter1 questioning why foreign coaches often fare better with the Super Eagles, writing, “I think he should just quit. He’s not fielding the right players. He lacks tactics. But why do foreign coaches always doing better?”
As the fallout from the Benin defeat continues, the pressure mounts on Finidi to turn the team’s fortunes around and keep their World Cup dreams alive.

UCL, EPL: Petr Cech Advises Chelsea On How To Win Trophies
Chelsea legend, Petr Cech, has advised his old club on how to win the UEFA Champions League or the English Premier League.
Chelsea are already out of the Premier League title race this season, and they are at risk of missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification for next season because they are currently not in the ninth position on the Premier League table.
Speaking to The Athletic about Chelsea, Cech said that the Blues need to change their philosophy of signing only young players if they want to win the Premier League or Champions League.

According to the former goalkeeper, the Premier League west London club needs to add experienced players to mentor the young players in the squad.
“You have to look at what you want to achieve. You can have young, talented players, and you can win, but it’s very rare that you manage to do that,” he said.
“If you want to win every season and compete every season, that does not go together.

“You have to change your philosophy. Certain things don’t go together because, in order to win a Champions League or a Premier League… these are really tough competitions, and you have to be consistent.
“You need to have a strong core of the team. And then you can bring young, talented players who will grow faster and then will be held by the experienced players to help navigate them through difficult times when they come.”
Currently, Chelsea have just one player, Tosin Adarabioyo, who is over 28 this season, and the defender has not been playing regularly.
