Suspected Herdsmen Kill Farmer In Edo Community

Tragedy struck at Ubune-Ivbiaro, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State on Friday as gunmen suspected to be herdsmen killed a middle-age man, Mr. Danjuma Emokpaire on his farm.

Residents of the community, who spoke to journalist on phone, said the deceased was attacked by the armed men while he was about leaving the farm after the day’s work.

The residents, who said they saw the victim going to farm on Friday, added that he was going to the farm to plant yam seedlings.

One of the residents disclosed that they became worried when in early morning on Saturday, the deceased was not seen at home.

According to him, “Yesterday evening (Friday ), there was heavy rainfall late night, so it wasn’t possible for people to know whether he returned from farm or not.

“But this morning (Saturday ), he was not seen around. This prompted some persons to go to his house and found it locked from the front.

“So, we have to mobilise and go to the farm to search for him. Unfortunately, behold what was seen was unexpected.

“We found him dead. What we see around the scene of the incident indicated that he was attack and killed while on the motorcycle.

“There was no sign that there was confrontation between him and those that killed him.

“The motorbike was damaged, cutlass and mobile phone cell were taken away by the murderer”, he said.

The resident, who did not want his name in print, added that the incident had been reported to the Afuze Divisional Police , and some officers were sent to the community who were taken to the farm.

Also speaking, a member of vigilante group in the community, Abdul Saliu Emokpaire, said the corpse of the deceased had been brought home for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Emokpaire, who called on the security agencies and the Edo State Government to come to the aid of the community, noted that the community had been gripped with fears, as the people were afraid to go to farm for fear of being attacked by herdsmen.

We call on security agencies in the state and governor Godwin Obaseki that we are mourning one of our illustrious son whose life was cut short by evil men who called themselves herdsmen.

“This is farming season, and this is the time the people of the community who are predominantly farmers are preparing land for cultivation. Fears have gripped the community. We are now afraid to go to our various farms”, he added.

He further added that some few weeks ago, some farmers were attacked by the suspected herdsmen after questioning why they destroyed their farms and as well as harvested their cassava to feed their cows.

Meanwhile, a senior police office in the Afuze Divisional Police Headquarters confirmed the incident.

The officer, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak with the media, said officers had been drafted to the community and visited the scene of the crime.

He also added that the officers obtained the necessary information that was required for investigation.

Contacted, the Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, said he was yet to be briefed, but said he would bring the information to the attention of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye.

Ex-convict Arrested In Edo For Armed Robbery, Possession Of Firearm

The Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) has arrested a 45-year-old ex-convict, Owen Osas, for alleged unlawful possession of firearms and suspected involvement in a robbery incident.

Osas was reportedly arrested with a cut-to-size single-barrel gun during a covert operation along Fishpond Road in Eyean, Uhunmwonde Local Government Area.

The arrest reportedly comes barely a year after he was released from prison, where he had served time for illegal possession of firearms and other criminal offences.

Osas, who confessed to the latest crime, also admitted to being a member of the Eiye Confraternity.

Consequently, a victim of an alleged robbery incident, Reginia Izy, identified Osas as the person who robbed her a day before his arrest.

The victim narrated that the suspect had approached her residence around 8 p.m., pretending to be familiar before carrying out the attack.

‎The Deputy Commander Operations of ESSC, Richard Balogun, said the arrest was part of intensified efforts to rid Edo State of criminal elements.

‎Balogun explained that operatives conduct both overt patrols and covert operations to track and apprehend suspects.

He said, ‎“Our men are always on patrol. Some operate in plain clothes as part of covert strategies, while others are stationed at strategic locations.

“Osas, who is a former convict, was arrested with firearms and he also confessed to be a member of the Eiye Confraternity.”

Gunmen Kidnap Businessman In Ibadan

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a 60-year-old man in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The victim was kidnapped on Saturday while on his way to his residence.

The incident occurred at Jinarere, Alakia in Ibadan.

Public Relations Officer of the State Police command, Olayinka Ayanlade, when contacted, confirmed the incident.

Ayanlade in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Sunday, explained that efforts are ongoing to rescue the victim.

Ayanlade said, “Preliminary information reveals that the victim, a 60-year-old male and building materials trader, was accosted while returning home along the Jinarere axis of Alakia Road by four masked armed men, who forcefully whisked him away in an unregistered ash-coloured Toyota Corolla vehicle”.

Tragedy As Suspected Kidnappers Kill Young Entrepreneur In Edo

A 30-year-old entrepreneur and CEO of Principle Takeout, Justice Abu Oshioke, has been killed by suspected kidnappers in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

He was reportedly attacked by the suspected kidnappers on Saturday while on his way to pick up an order made for his child’s dedication on Sunday morning.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers attempted to force him into a nearby bush in a kidnapping attempt. However, he reportedly resisted and tried to escape.

In the course of the struggle, the assailants opened fire, shooting him multiple times.

Concerned residents quickly rushed him to a nearby medical facility, but he was confirmed dead on arrival.

The deceased was said to have recently gotten married and welcomed a baby boy.

The tragic event has turned a joyous occasion into a moment of grief for the family.

The shocking development has left the Ekpoma community in deep sorrow, with many residents expressing outrage over the growing insecurity in the area.

Edo State Police Command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem confirmed the incident and said the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika has ordered a “full-scale investigation and intensified manhunt for those responsible.” 

According to her, the Police, in collaboration with the military, local vigilantes, and hunters, are actively pursuing the perpetrators through coordinated operations.
