A tragic incident has shaken Okigwe Arondizuogu, Imo State, following the death of a young man, Ugochukwu Okoro, who was allegedly killed by the Nigerian Army during a protest demanding the release of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
This unfortunate event, which took place on September 13, 2022, ignited widespread outrage, prompting mass demonstrations by local youths.
Reports indicate that Ugochukwu Okoro was actively participating in the pro-Biafra movement when security forces fatally shot him during the protest.
In reaction to his death and the deaths of other youths, furious community members took to the streets to voice their anger.
However, just four days after the initial demonstration, the situation escalated dramatically as military personnel reportedly invaded Okigwe Arondizuogu, opening fire on the youths which resulted in additional casualties.

He sought legal counsel and was advised to leave the country immediately to safeguard himself and his family.

“We were simply protesting peacefully, seeking justice for our brother, Ugochukwu Okoro, and other innocent youths who lost their lives. But soldiers arrived and began shooting. Many people were fleeing for their lives, and I saw bodies lying on the ground. Some were arrested and taken away. It was a horrific scene.”
Another resident recounted how the military returned days later and unleashed further violence.
“After the protest, we thought everything was over. But just four days later, soldiers stormed our village, shooting at anyone in sight. They set fire to houses and cars, including Victor Onyeabor Okoro’s vehicle. We are left wondering what we did to deserve this.”
Community Leaders Reactions
The traditional ruler of a neighboring community, [Name Withheld], condemned the attack, calling for calm and urging the government to investigate the allegations.
“This is not how things should be handled. The people have a right to express their grievances, and security forces should not turn their weapons on innocent citizens. We are calling on the government to intervene and hold those responsible accountable.”
