Manchester To Host 2027 G20 Summit

Published

on

US President Donald Trump will join other world leaders in Manchester next year for the G20 leaders’ summit, with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham saying he is “really pleased” to welcome the US president to the city.

The G20 summit, an annual meeting of the world’s major economies, will be held on November 27 and 28, 2027, at the Manchester Central Convention Centre.

The event will be the largest summit ever held in Manchester, with preparations expected to intensify as the United Kingdom prepares to take over the G20 presidency.

Manchester was selected as the host city earlier this year, before Burnham became prime minister. Downing Street said preparations would now step up, with hundreds of local people expected to be involved in organising the event.

Burnham, who previously served as mayor of Greater Manchester, said he was looking forward to welcoming Trump despite comments the US president previously made about the city.

In June, as Burnham was emerging as a likely candidate to become prime minister, Trump referred to him as “the mayor of a town”.

Burnham said that during his first telephone conversation with Trump, he addressed the comment directly.

He told the president: “Manchester isn’t ‘some town’…this is Manchester”.

Burnham said the appropriate response was to laugh about the exchange and “move beyond it”.

His relationship with Trump also marks a change from comments Burnham made while serving as mayor.

At the time, Burnham told the Manchester Evening News that he “wouldn’t welcome” a visit from the American president.

However, speaking to reporters while travelling to New York, where he is scheduled to meet Trump for the first time on Tuesday, Burnham said political figures sometimes make different statements at different stages of their careers.

“Politicians say things throughout their career, but now the important thing is to focus on the moment you are in,” he said.

Councillor Garry Bridges, the new leader of Manchester City Council, said hosting the G20 summit would have been “unthinkable a couple of years ago”.

He said he hoped Trump’s visit would help change the US president’s perception of Manchester.

The UK previously hosted the G20 summit in London in 2009. The security operation for that meeting was estimated to have cost £7.2m.

In addition to the main summit in Manchester, events will be held across the UK during the country’s G20 presidency.

The United States currently holds the presidency, with this year’s summit scheduled to take place in Miami in December.

The G20 brings together 19 of the world’s largest economies, alongside representatives of the European Union and African Union.

The group represents about two-thirds of the world’s population and more than 85% of global wealth.

The G20 was established in 1999 with the aim of promoting financial stability and international economic cooperation.

Premier League: What We Learned After Five Games This Season

Published

on

The Premier League has paused for an extended international break after the opening five matches of the 2026-27 season, giving all 20 clubs time to assess their starts.

The new campaign has already produced a perfect record for Manchester City, an early setback for defending champions Arsenal, strong starts for Brighton, Brentford, Leeds United, Liverpool and Everton, and difficult beginnings for Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and Bournemouth.

Manchester City lead the table with 15 points, three clear of Arsenal. Brighton are third on 10 points, while Brentford, Leeds, Liverpool and Everton have nine each.

Here are the main lessons from the opening five games.

Manchester City’s perfect start

Enzo Maresca has won all five Premier League matches since taking charge of Manchester City, with Sunday’s 5-3 victory over Sunderland extending their run to seven consecutive wins in all competitions.

City have scored 13 goals and conceded five in the league, with their latest win keeping them three points clear at the top.

However, the Sunderland game also exposed defensive weaknesses, with Brian Brobbey scoring a hat-trick.

Maresca acknowledged that City still have plenty to improve on despite their perfect start.

Arsenal are beatable

Arsenal looked set for another strong start until Brighton ended their perfect run with a 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium.

The defeat was Arsenal’s first in the league this season and their heaviest since May 2023, when they also lost 3-0 to Brighton.

A win would have given Mikel Arteta’s side an eighth consecutive victory in all competitions, but Brighton exposed areas the champions will need to address.

“That’s not going to take away what the team has done and the boys have done in the last six or seven weeks since coming back from the World Cup,” Arteta said.

“What we’ve done, the way we’ve competed and the amount of games we’ve won has been remarkable – but this is a big lesson for all of us to understand what it takes to win at this level.”

Arsenal remain second on 12 points, three behind City.

Brighton and Brentford strong start

Brighton have made one of the strongest starts in the division and moved into third after their win over Arsenal.

They have 10 points from five games and have scored 16 goals, the highest total in the league.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side have also beaten the reigning champions at home in each of the past three seasons.

Brentford are fourth on nine points and remain unbeaten after five matches.

Keith Andrews’ side followed three draws and a win with a 3-0 victory over Chelsea, continuing their impressive start after Thomas Frank’s departure.

Leeds, Liverpool and Everton mixed resuts

Leeds United are also unbeaten after five matches, with two wins and three draws leaving Daniel Farke’s side fifth on nine points.

Their latest result was a goalless draw against Crystal Palace.

Liverpool also have nine points after beating Bournemouth 1-0 on Sunday, with Alexander Isak scoring the only goal.

The victory moved Andoni Iraola’s side into sixth place.

Everton are seventh, also on nine points, after a 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

All three clubs have made solid starts and remain within touching distance of the early leaders.

Hull City quick start

Promoted Hull City sit eighth with eight points after five matches.

Their only defeat came against Newcastle United on Saturday, when they lost 2-1.

Two wins and two draws before that result have given Hull an encouraging start to life in the Premier League.

Their position above several established top-flight clubs shows the promoted side have adapted quickly to the demands of the division.

Unbalanced Newcastle

Newcastle United are ninth with eight points after two wins, two draws and one defeat.

They came from behind to beat Hull 2-1 on Saturday, with Mohamed Ali-Cho scoring the decisive goal.

The Magpies have scored nine goals but also conceded nine, highlighting the balance they still need to find between attack and defence.

Unpredictable Chelsea

Chelsea sit 10th with seven points after a mixed opening five games as Xabi Alonso’s side have scored 10 goals but conceded 12, leaving them with a negative goal difference.

Their latest setback was a 3-0 defeat by Brentford, after earlier results included wins over Fulham and Brighton, a defeat by Arsenal and a draw against Hull.

Chelsea have produced plenty of goals, but their defensive record remains a concern.

Ipswich’s mixed return

Ipswich Town are 11th with six points after two wins and three defeats.

Their latest result was a 1-0 defeat by Everton, with Abdul Fatawu sent off in the second half.

The promoted side have scored seven goals but conceded 11, showing both the attacking potential and defensive problems that have marked their opening five matches.

Manchester United under pressure

Manchester United have won only once in their first five league games and sit 12th with five points.

Michael Carrick’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham on Sunday after Matheus Cunha’s late deflected goal cancelled out a Lisandro Martinez own goal.

United had 29 attempts compared with Fulham’s 12 but needed a late goal to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

Their five points are their joint-lowest tally after five Premier League games.

Nottingham Forest slow start

Nottingham Forest are 13th with five points after one win, two draws and two defeats.

They suffered a 1-0 home defeat by Coventry City on Sunday, allowing the promoted side to record their first Premier League victory of the season.

Forest have scored only four goals in five matches and will need greater attacking output after the break.

Sunderland showing signs

Sunderland are 14th on four points but produced one of the most memorable performances of the opening five games in their 5-3 defeat by Manchester City.

Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick at the Etihad Stadium, twice bringing Sunderland level before City eventually pulled away.

Despite the defeat, the promoted side showed they can cause problems for established Premier League opponents.

Crystal Palace’s inconsistency

Crystal Palace are 15th with four points after one win, one draw and three defeats.

They held Leeds United to a 0-0 draw on Sunday but remain in the lower half of the table.

Palace have scored six goals and conceded 11 in their first five matches, leaving them with work to do when the league resumes.

Aston Villa’s first win

Aston Villa picked up their first league victory of the season by beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 on Saturday.

Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emiliano Buendia scored for Villa, while Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke replied for Spurs.

The result lifted Villa to 16th with four points after three defeats, one draw and one win.

Bournemouth searching for a win

Bournemouth are one of three clubs yet to win a league match.

They have three points from three draws and two defeats and sit 17th.

Their latest result was a 1-0 home defeat by Liverpool, with Alexander Isak scoring the only goal.

The Cherries have scored six times but conceded eight.

Coventry finally break through

Coventry City ended a difficult opening four games with their first Premier League goal and victory of the season.

Jay Dasilva scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, giving Coventry their first top-flight victory in 25 years.

They remain 18th on three points, with four defeats from their first five matches, but the win gives Frank Lampard’s side a platform to build on.

Fulham search for a win

Fulham have two points from five matches after drawing twice and losing three times.

They looked set to record their first victory when Lisandro Martinez’s own goal gave them the lead against Manchester United, but Cunha’s late deflected effort denied them.

Fulham remain 19th, with five goals scored and eight conceded.

Tottenham scoring concern

Tottenham are bottom of the Premier League after five games, with two points and no victories.

Their latest setback was a 3-2 home defeat by Aston Villa, their third loss of the season.

Spurs spent heavily during the summer but have scored only twice in five league matches and conceded eight.

Manager Roberto de Zerbi said after the defeat: “We have to put on the pitch something more than we are putting.”

Football is tactical but it is blood, it is fighting, it is first one on the ball. We will suffer until the next game.”

Tottenham’s position at the bottom represents their lowest league standing since 2009.

The Premier League will now pause until October 10, with the September and October international windows combined into a 16-day break. The extended window allows countries to play four international matches before the league resumes.

Premier League Predictions For Matchweek 5 Fixtures

Published

on

The Premier League enters Matchweek 5 with several clubs looking to build momentum before the international break, while others are desperate for a result after difficult starts to the campaign.

Manchester United travel to Fulham looking to recover from a difficult week, while Chelsea face another test against a Brentford side capable of hurting opponents on the counter-attack.

Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa meet with both sides still searching for their first league wins, while Manchester City will look to build on their derby victory when they host Sunderland.

Elsewhere, unbeaten Hull City visit Newcastle United, Liverpool travel to Bournemouth, Arsenal host free-scoring Brighton, and Leeds United face Crystal Palace.

Man United vs Fulham

Manchester United have collected just four points from their opening four league games and need a response after their 3-2 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup.

Michael Carrick’s side also suffered a 1-0 derby defeat by Manchester City last weekend, making a positive result at Craven Cottage particularly important before the international break.

Fulham, however, will provide a stern test as Alvaro Arbeloa’s side picked up an impressive 0-0 draw at Liverpool last weekend and will be confident of frustrating United again.

United have more pressure on them, but their need for a result could give them the urgency required to edge a tight contest.

Chelsea vs Brentford

Chelsea have conceded nine goals in their first four Premier League matches, with at least two goals going in against them in every game.

Xabi Alonso has acknowledged that his side are making repeated defensive mistakes, but Brentford’s counter-attacking threat means Chelsea cannot afford another error-prone performance.

Keith Andrews’ side are also dangerous from set pieces and have shown they can punish teams that leave space behind.

Chelsea should have enough attacking quality to score, but their defensive problems could prevent them from keeping a clean sheet.

Prediction: Brentford 2-3 Chelsea

Tottenham vs Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa have both made disappointing starts and remain without a Premier League victory after four matches.

Both clubs underwent significant changes during the summer and are still adapting to the demands of their respective managers, Roberto De Zerbi and Unai Emery.

Home advantage could give Tottenham the edge, but Villa have enough quality to make this a closely fought contest.

Man City vs Sunderland

Manchester City have won all four of their Premier League matches and will be looking to maintain that record against Sunderland.

Sunderland are yet to win away from home this season, drawing at Brentford and losing at Ipswich.

City, meanwhile, will be full of confidence after their derby victory and should have enough control and attacking quality to secure another three points.

Prediction: Man City 3-2 Sunderland

Hull vs Newcastle

Hull City have made an excellent start to life in the Premier League and will arrive at St James’ Park unbeaten after four matches.

Newcastle, by contrast, have conceded eight league goals and allowed more shots than any other team in the division so far.

Their defensive problems were particularly evident in the 4-1 defeat by Leeds United, giving Hull reason to believe they can cause another upset.

Newcastle’s attacking quality should make this competitive, but Hull’s confidence and ability to exploit spaces could earn them a result.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Hull

Bournemouth v Liverpool

Bournemouth and Liverpool could produce an open contest given the attacking approaches of both teams.

Bournemouth have scored in every Premier League match this season, while Liverpool will be looking to improve after their goalless draw with Fulham.

Marco Rose has continued to encourage an aggressive, high-pressing style, while Liverpool under Andoni Iraola are also expected to play with intensity.

That could create an entertaining game with chances at both ends.

Prediction: Bournemouth 2-2 Liverpool

Brighton vs Arsenal

Brighton have been one of the most productive attacking sides in the league, scoring 13 goals in their opening four matches.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side also lead the division for high turnovers, underlining their aggressive approach.

Arsenal, however, have been difficult to break down. Mikel Arteta’s side have conceded just 2.7 expected goals in total across their opening four league games.

Brighton’s pressing could cause problems, but Arsenal’s defensive structure should give them a platform to secure another important result.

Prediction: Brighton 1-2 Arsenal

Leeds vs Crystal Palace

Leeds have collected eight points from their opening four matches and produced one of their most impressive performances of the season with a 4-1 victory at Newcastle.

Their strong summer recruitment has added depth to a side that already appears comfortable at Premier League level.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, have conceded 11 goals and faced the highest expected goals against figure in the division.

Leeds should be able to exploit those defensive weaknesses, particularly at Elland Road.

Prediction: Leeds 3-1 Crystal Palace

Nottingham Forest vs Coventry

Nottingham Forest will be looking to build on their late victory at Aston Villa when they host Coventry City.

Forest have yet to score at the City Ground in the league this season, but Coventry arrive having lost all four of their opening matches without scoring.

Oliver Glasner’s side have a chance to turn their recent away victory into a positive run of form, while home advantage should help them finally find the net at the City Ground.

Prediction: Nottingham Forest 2-0 Coventry City

Ipswich vs Everton

Ipswich have already collected six points from their opening four matches and are showing signs that they could make a serious push for Premier League survival.

A victory at Everton would take them to nine points and further strengthen their early-season position.

Everton will be determined to avoid another setback at home, but Ipswich’s confidence and disciplined approach could earn them another valuable point.

Prediction: Everton 1-1 Ipswich Town
