UK, Brighter Futures Takes Campaign Against Cultism To Edo State

Cancel Cults’, a campaign launched by the Brighter Futures Programme and supported by the Unite Kingdom government is set to curb the menace of cultism in Edo State which has claimed thousands of lives.

Cultism and other forms of serious organised crime have been a significant challenge in Nigeria, particularly in Edo State.

According to Exams Ethic Marshall International (EEMI), no fewer than 10,000 people have been killed in cult-related violence within and outside school campuses between 1996 and 2019.

To address the problem, the “Cancel Cults” campaign in Edo State, supported by the UK government aims to reduce cultism and other forms of serious organized crime in Nigeria.

The campaign’s primary focus is to reach vulnerable youths and educate them on the dangers of cultism and provide alternative pathways to build sustainable livelihoods.

The management team in a statement explained that the Cancel Cults campaign adopts various strategies to reach vulnerable youths in Edo State, including radio talk shows, awareness events, engagements in schools and communities, and social media influencers.

The campaign will also introduce school mentorship programs and sports to sensitize vulnerable youths to the dangers of cybercrime in their communities, the team stated.

The campaign will also enlighten young people in Edo State to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities through legitimate means.

Speaking about the campaign in Edo State, Mr. Odili Adams, a member from one of the target communities of the Cancel Cults campaign stated, “For too long, we have feared that one day our children and young adults would fall victim to the lies of cultists and end up wasting their lives, after all, there is a limit to how much we parents can monitor our children, however, this CANCEL CULTS campaign will augment the efforts made to protect our youths from cultist’s narratives and build their resilience to become valuable members of the community.”

“The campaign is working with the government and other Civil Society Organizations to create an environment where youths can thrive through legitimate means. The campaign encourages young people to take advantage of the many opportunities available to them and avoid the trap of cultism and other criminal activities,” the statement read.

The launch of the Cancel Cults campaign in Edo State has been described as a step in the right direction towards curbing cultism and other forms of serious organized crime in Nigeria.

Brighter Futures Campaign, therefore called on all stakeholders to support the vital initiative and create a brighter future for Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.

Heineken Withdraws Staff As Armed Rebels Seize Facilities In Eastern DR Congo

Heineken has lost operational control and withdrawn its staff from facilities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), CNN on Saturday quoted that the Dutch brewer announced on Friday.

In March, the company had suspended operations in three eastern cities, citing safety concerns after breweries were damaged and depots raided during clashes between government forces and rebels.

On Friday, Heineken said the situation had worsened. Armed groups have taken control of its sites in Bukavu and Goma—eastern Congo’s largest cities—as well as surrounding areas.

The conditions required to operate responsibly and safely are no longer present and as of 12th June 2025, we have lost operational control,” it said in a statement.

The PUNCH reported on Wednesday, Congo, Rwanda, and the United States said their technical teams had initialed a draft peace agreement, which is expected to be signed next week.

Heineken’s local unit, Bralima, continues to operate in parts of the country not affected by the fighting. The company said it is monitoring developments closely.

Heineken owns four breweries in the DRC, producing its namesake beer along with local brands such as Primus. It previously said its Bukavu facilities employed about 1,000 people directly and indirectly.

Reuters also reported, “We have withdrawn all remaining staff from these sites and we have continued to support them financially.”

Nearly 14 per cent of Heineken’s total revenue comes from its Middle East and Africa operations, with Congo—home to over 100 million people—a significant market.

Before the suspension, operations in Goma, Bukavu, and Uvira represented roughly one-third of Heineken’s business in the country.

Conflict in eastern Congo has intensified in 2025, with the M23 rebel group making major territorial gains, sparking fears of broader regional instability.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the ongoing violent conflict between Iran and Israel is “a fire no one can control” and risks spiralling out of control.

Guterres also warned that the world stood on the edge of catastrophe as Israel’s military campaign inside Iran intensified and strikes on nuclear facilities threatened to trigger a catastrophe.

The regional fallout is expanding, with missiles from Yemen’s Houthi forces targeting Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory, while armed groups in Iraq are reportedly mobilising.

In an address to the UN Security Council on Friday, Guterres made an urgent plea for de-escalation, calling the spiralling confrontation a defining moment for the future of global security.

The Secretary-General’s remarks came amid a mounting civilian toll in both Israel and Iran, and as several nuclear sites in Iran have come under direct military assault.

Over 100 targets have reportedly been struck across Iran, including military and nuclear infrastructure such as the Natanz and Isfahan nuclear facilities and the Khondab heavy water reactor.

As laid out in Trump’s Executive Order 14161, ‘Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and other National Security and Public Safety Threats’, the visa adjudication process has got to ensure that US-bound foreign travellers do not pose a threat to the national security and public safety of the United States.

She said that the Department of State assesses countries’ security capabilities, information sharing, and identity management practices to determine whether they can be trusted to provide reliable information for visa adjudication.

Countries that fail to meet certain security standards may face travel restrictions or entry bans. The goal is to ensure that US-bound foreign travelers do not pose a threat to national security and public safety, Bruce explained.

When asked about a deadline for countries to come up with an action plan, the spokesperson clarified that there is no immediate deadline, stating that countries will have a considerable amount of time to rectify any issues affecting the nature of the US trust in how they issue visas.
