US Actress Piper Laurie Is Dead

An American actress Piper Laurie – best known for her roles in The Hustler and Carrie films – has died aged 91.

Laurie’s manager, Marion Rosenberg told the Associated Press that the three-time Oscar nominee passed away in her Los Angeles home.

She described the actress as “a superb talent and a wonderful human being.”

Her talents were not limited to acting – Laurie took a 15-year-break from acting to campaign for the civil rights movement.

She was nominated for an Oscar for the first movie she starred in upon her return – Carrie.

Born as Rosetta Jacobs, she was born in Detroit, Michigan to parents of Russian and Polish heritage.

She was signed by Universal Studios at the age of 17 – earning a contract and a new name: Piper Laurie.

However, Laurie became frustrated with the acting industry and being cast in the same roles, and broke her Hollywood contract – moving to New York to pursue other roles.

She later stepped away from the profession on what became a 15-year-break and focussed her attentions on the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War.

During that time she also married film critic Joe Morgenstern, and had a daughter.

‘You’re Killing Us’ – Nigerian Singer Tells Clubs Selling ‘Fake’ Drinks

Popular singer, Daniel Benson, aka BNXN, has warned Nigerian clubs that sell “fake” drinks to desist from the crime, saying they are killing their customers.

The ‘Finesse’ crooner lamented that he recently paid for a drink at a Lagos club and a “fake” one was delivered to him.

He threatened to call out the next club or lounge that would sell “fake” drinks to him.

On his X handle on Sunday, BNXN wrote, “Stop selling us fake drinks after spending so much money on the overpriced drinks. You’re killing us.

“Respect my health , Respect my money. Give me what I pay for. If you don’t have it , don’t bring a fake one!

I Almost Quit Nollywood Over Sexual Harassment – Mercy Aigbe

Popular Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe has narrated how she almost left the Nigerian movie industry over sexual harassment.

The actress disclosed this while narrating her challenges before making her way to the top.

Speaking in an interview with Morayo Afolabi-Brown on ‘Your View’, a talk show on TVC, Aigbe recounted how a producer made passes at her after a movie audition despite earning the role for an upcoming film.

“I met a producer in Surulere, and I expressed to him how much I would love to act. He told me he had an upcoming film and invited me to his office for an audition in his office.

”After I had passed three stages of the audition, I was given a minor role, which I told him that was not the character I was auditioning for, and he replied that the director said he did not know me, and that was why he wanted me to be close to him,” she said.

“He then stood up to touch me. I was very upset and I thought if that was what it took to be an actress, I don’t want to be an actress anymore. I tore the script and left. I cried on my way going home because I left a well paying job to join Nollywood, and I was already a single mother at the time.”
