Victor Uwaifo Did Not Die Of COVID-19 Complications – Family

Published

on

The son of deceased music maestro, Prof. Sir Victor Uwaifo, has debunked rumours that his father died of the dreaded COVID-19.

The music legend died Saturday in Benin at the age of 80.

Son of the deceased, Goodman Osarentin Uwaifo, who spoke in company of his sister, Mrs. Evelyn Oghonmwen insisted that his father died from complications resulting from pneumonia and not COVID-19.

Goodman, the third son of the music icon said that the elder Uwaifo was rushed to Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin on Friday and passed on at about 4pm from untreated pneumonia.

He said: “I want to use this opportunity to clear this misinformation. We have heard rumours going around that our father, Sir Victor Uwaifo died of COVID-19. It is not true. He died of pneumonia and not COVID-19. He was rushed to the hospital on Friday and passed on the following day on Saturday August 28. We did the necessary tests. He was treated for pneumonia.”

His house on Victor Uwaifo Avenue off College Road was a beehive of activities as people from different walks of life and neighbours trooped in to condole with the octogenarian’s children.

In deep distress, the younger Uwaifo, a pastor confessed that he is yet to come to grip with the loss of his father but had been able to weather the storm because of his strong faith in God.

He said in low tone: “I have mixed feelings over his sudden death. Before he passed on, I had different feelings. I am yet to accept the reality of his death I am very very sad. I am able to bear because of my calling as a pastor. I will not respond emotionally as my brothers and sisters are doing because of my calling as a pastor. I am really sad.”

He said that his father will be remembered for his works which he said are evergreen, noting that people like the multi talented musicians are hard to come by.

The cause of the death could not be ascertained as Peter Uwaifo, a budding musician simply wrote on his Facebook page: “Daddy why did you leave us now? Prof. Sir Victor Uwaifo has gone to rest. Black Saturday for me one week after collaborating with me.”

Born on March1,1941, the music legend was a writer, sculptor, musical instrument inventor and university lecturer.

He was the Edo State Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism during former Governor Lucky Igbinedion’s administration and was the winner of the first gold disc in Africa (Joromi) released in 1965 and seven other gold discs in Guitar boy, Arabade, Ekassa series and Akwete music.

The sleepy town of Uwala Abaka, Ukehe, in Nsukka, Igboetiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, was enveloped by sadness and grief, as the remains of one of their illustrious sons, actor John Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope was laid to rest.

The burial rites commenced at 10 am with a commendation mass at St. Peter’s Catholic Parish, Ukehe, and lying-in-state at his father’s compound, where family members, well-wishers, colleagues and friends had the final glimpse of the late actor before the body was moved to a private venue for internment at about 1.30 pm.

The atmosphere at the burial ceremony was somber as colleagues and fans gathered to pay their final respects to the late actor.

Her first son, who was trying to console his mother by wiping the tears off her face, equally broke down in tears. Unfortunately, some of the A-list actors and actresses, including the leadership of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, were visibly missing at the burial ceremony.

The 43-year-old actor died alongside four other people on April 10, after their boat capsized in the Anam River, in Anambra State, while returning from a movie shoot.

Street-pop artiste, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has released a new song following his recent arrest by the Lagos State Police Command for failing to settle a debt related to the purchase of a G-Wagon.

It was gathered that Portable had paid only N13 million after purchasing the vehicle, which was worth N27 million. He was said to have refused to pay the N14 million balance.

Recall that the Lagos State police command released the singer on bail, on Thursday, after spending a night in custody.

The song, produced by 2tuponthebeat, hints at the singer’s agility and ability to “fly” over obstacles, referencing how he evaded arrest by jumping over a gate.

Recall that Portable released the track ‘I’m Not A Prisoner’ following his arrest in 2023 after failing to honour several police invitations.

Portable just dropped a new song. He used the voice over from his arrest video as the intro. I said it yesterday, this guy doesn’t disappoint. Spiderman.

Portable don drop new song called Spiderman. He even used the voice over from his arrest video as the intro. You can’t shame the shameless.

If all artists turned their experiences into songs like Portable does, they won’t struggle with their catalogue.

It’s a bad thing to owe, evade arrest and to be an “Onigbese”.But Portable knows how to flip the narrative in his favour.

He understands that attention is the currency of marketing.#portable#spiderman

In this era, it’s never about how good or talented you are anymore; it’s more about how long you can hold people’s attention. Interestingly, Portable has been able to do that consistently since he got his break in 2021 and has chosen not to leave the limelight anytime soon.
