In a candid interview with media personality Toke Makinwa, popular actor Jim Iyke, has opened up on the role that delayed grief played in his crashed marriage.

In the video which started trending on Saturday, Iyke attributed the breakdown of his marriage to his deferred grief, mainly linked to the loss of his late mother.

He confessed that his inability to properly mourn his mother’s passing was the cause. The actor admitted to postponing the grieving process, and by the time he confronted his sorrow, it had taken a toll on his marriage.

He also mentioned that he was in the process of building a house for his beloved mother before her demise.

Iyke further disclosed that being the only male child, he had to step into the role of the strong male figure in his family. This left little room for him to express his emotions. While the rest of his family openly mourned, he took on the role of a pillar of strength.

He said in part, “I was dealing with two parallels that I could not contain. I just lost my mom, and I was in a place where I didn’t know how to navigate the motions the woman was giving me.

“I just needed somebody. She didn’t need me that way. She needed to love me, and I would love her back, and I couldn’t reciprocate. I turned all my attention on our child, and she didn’t know how to deal with it.

“I didn’t grieve properly. I was the second head of the family; my father had fallen apart emotionally, and I had only sisters.

In a video making the rounds on social media, Asake, while chatting with a group of friends, stated that it is better to be egoistic than to be “too humble,” as he emphasised that excessive humility often brings disrespect.

He said: “To me, humility is like a waste of time. People don’t appreciate it. At the end of the day, life is about your perception. That is how I think. It’s my world.

“I’ve been around people, that I tried to let them say who I am but they didn’t appreciate it. As an artiste, if you come to somewhere, if you’re humble, they will take you for granted. But if you have ego, they feel like you’re not accessible so they will like you more. People would rather see what you’re doing than you showing them humility. So, just do what you need to do.”
