Auchi Poly Rectorship: ASUP Chairman Under Fire Over Alleged Endorsement Of Candidate
Chairman, Auchi Polytechnic chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Mr Lawani Jimoh, has reportedly tendered an apology for not consulting members of the union before his endorsement of a particular candidate for the vacant position of rector of the nation’s polytechnic.
Jiomh was said to have regretted his action during a congress of the union which took place on Friday at the Polytechnic New Auditorium, Campus 1
In the tension soaked congress, members of the union reportedly questioned motive of the ASUP chairman for the endorsement without the congress approval and demanded for a retraction of the purported endorsement.
The members subsequently demanded for an outright apology from the chairman on the matter and cautioned him on future occurrence.
Without argument, Jimoh rose and tendered unreserved apology to the congress.
Recall that position of the polytechnic rector had been vacant following the demise of the rector, Dr Sunny Jimah, in November 2020.
It was gathered that following the advertisement on the vacant position, six persons were shortlisted (four internal and two external) for interview that had since been conducted to fill the vacant position.
However, it was alleged that the chairman of the union took side with one of the internal candidates and wrote a letter of endorsement in favour of the particular candidate to President Muhammadu Buhari.
This triggered some form of protest from other candidates, who are also members of the institution’s chapter of the ASUP.
It would also be recalled that a group under the aegis of Alliance for the Advancement of Auchi Polytechnic, had on several occasions, harped on the need for due process to be followed in the appointment of a substantive rector for the polytechnic.
The convener of the group, Alhaji Oshiobugie Danjuma, had stated that this would help to avoid taking the polytechnic back to the “dark days.”
Danjuma had explained that the appointment of a rector with the right requisite would place the first generation polytechnic in a pole position for its planned upgrade to a University.
