Woman Burns Self To Death Over Inability To Offset LAPO N70,000 Loan

A middle-aged woman, known as Mama Dada, has reportedly set herself ablaze in her rented apartment over her inability to offset a loan of N70,000 she took from a microfinance bank popularly known as LAPO.

The PUNCH gathered that the deceased got burnt beyond recognition as the entire building located at the Oke-Keesi, Itoko area of Abeokuta.

LAPO is known for lending money to traders and other small-scale business owners with specific instructions for repayment plans.

An eyewitness, Bolanle Ajayi, a resident of the area, said that the woman killed herself after she was unable to pay back a loan she took from LAPO.

She said, “I was told that she obtained the loan running into N70,000.”

A former member of the LAPO group, who identified herself simply as Mrs Adeogun said an ‘unprecedented embarrassment’ will befall anyone who refuses to pay back the borrowed money from the bank at the set date.

“If you refuse to pay them back at the set date, you will be treated like trash, you will be embarrassed in a big way, in a manner that your children will forever be ashamed of. I know what I am saying, I used to be a member.

“One must be a member and a committed one before you will be given a reasonable amount of money.

“What they do is that you will join the group and start making thrift with them, it is the evidence of this thrift through your card that will qualify you for a loan which you must either pay back outrightly or in batches.

“But either in batches or outrightly, there is always a set date for repayment that you must meet but if you default…you will live to blame yourself.”

The secretary of the Community Development Association in the area, Ade Babawale, confirmed that the deceased was owing the bank.

He said, “she is owing the ‘Gbomu le lantern’ the sum of N70,000, because she was unable to meet up with the payment she then sent her last born to buy fuel and also use style to discharge the small boy and she locks herself up inside the room and wet everywhere with petrol including herself and set the whole place on fire.”

Her corpse has been deposited at the state General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he had not been briefed about the incident.

Oyeyemi, however, promised to get back after he must have been briefed but, had not got back as of the time of filing this report.

Police Arrest 10 Suspected Drug Peddlers In Delta, Recover Illicit Drugs

Operatives of the Delta State’s Eagle-Net Special Squad led by SP Danyaya Yunusa, in a joint patrol with the Nigeria Hunters Forest Security Services, NHFSS have arrested ten suspected drug peddlers and recovered a substantial quantity of illicit drugs.

The arrests were made during a raid of a hotel along the Asaba, Benin Expressway, Agbor.

Among the suspects arrested is Markwuye Peter, the owner of the hotel.

According to DAILY POST, the suspects who are currently in custody, were arrested on 13th September, 2025.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer SP, Bright Edafe, confirmed the report in a statement sent in Warri.

He said,”On 13th September, 2025, operatives of the Delta State Eagle Net Special Squad, led by the Commander, SP Danyaya Yunusa, in a joint operation with the Nigeria Hunters Forest Security Service (NHFSS), acting on credible intelligence, stormed a hotel situated along the Asaba/Benin Expressway, Agbor.”

According to SP Edafe,”The raid led to the arrest of ten (10) adult suspects, including Markwuye Peter ‘m’ of Ifeanchukwu Street, Agbor, identified as the owner of the hotel.

“A substantial quantity of illicit drugs was recovered during the operation. The suspects are currently in custody, while discreet investigations have commenced to unravel the full extent of their criminal activities.”

Police Neutralize Two Wanted Bandit Leaders In Abuja, Foil Kidnap Attempt

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command have neutralized a wanted bandit leader, Abdullahi Umar aka ‘Duna’, and his lieutenants Buba Ahmadi aka Killer, and Habi Sule, aka ‘Mai-Kudi.

The bandits were neutralized in Abuja.

FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao S. Adewale, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the command’s headquarters on Friday.

The CP told journalists that on September 15, 2025, the command received a report of armed hoodlums attacking Kpobi and Kpaduma 3 villages in the Guzape area of the FCT.

He said two vigilantes sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and one of them, Bako Pwaza, later died at the National Hospital, Abuja.

The police boss explained that the attackers attempted to kidnap two young ladies, but failed due to a coordinated response team led by himself, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the Rapid Response Squad commander, and other officers.

He explained that the young ladies were successfully rescued.

The CP added that on September 17, 2025, the same group of bandits struck again at Karu, where one Nafiu Idris, a staff of the Federal Capital Territory Authority, FCTA, Department of Urban Affairs, was abducted.

He noted that acting swiftly, the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, in synergy with the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army, operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, hunters and vigilantes, launched a clearance operation.

He said the operation paid off on September 18, 2025 when the security operatives stormed the bandits’ hideout in Zinda Forest, behind the Nigerian Army Estate in Kurudu, bordering Nasarawa State.

The CP noted that the gang engaged the operatives in a fierce gun battle.

Our team overpowered them. Three of the notorious criminals, including their wanted leader Abdullahi Umar aka “Duna,” and his lieutenants Buba Ahmadi aka “Killer” and Habi Sule aka “Mai-Kudi,” were neutralized.”

Two AK-49 rifles with breach numbers 1983 NK 2202 and 1975 SW0924, two magazines with seven rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, two Itel handsets, ATM cards and other items were recovered from them.

The CP added that investigation revealed that the neutralized gang leader, Duna, was responsible for multiple kidnappings in Karu, Guzape, Kpobi, Army Estate Kurudu, and several locations in Nasarawa State.

Ondo Amotekun Arrests Kidnappers, Other Suspects

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, otherwise known as Amotekun Corps, on Friday disclosed that it has arrested no fewer than 51 suspected criminals in various parts of the state within the last two weeks.

Commander of the Corps in the state, Adetunji Adeleye, who disclosed this while parading the suspects at the headquarters of the corps, stated that the offences of the suspects range from armed robbery and rape to human trafficking, burglary, and violations of the anti-open grazing law.

Adeleye, who attributed the breakthrough to the resilience of the Amotekun operatives and synergy with other security agencies in the state, said that six major kidnap suspects were apprehended after operatives tracked their activities in the state.

He said: “I want to state that in the last three weeks, the state has been relatively safe, and pockets of security breaches have been attended to by the combined efforts of all the security agencies in the state. So, to residents and commuters of Ondo State, I want to reassure you that all security agencies, especially the Ondo State Security Network Agency, remain resolute at ensuring and guaranteeing the safety of lives and property.

“Your lives are safe and guaranteed by God Almighty and the support of the state government, and your remuneration is comparatively good with other agencies, so we don’t have any choice but to continue to put in our best.

“Today, we are parading 51 suspects arrested in various nooks and crannies and forests of the state. We have 37 suspects arrested for breaking law and order. We have six major kidnap suspects and one case of abuse, which is rape.

“As a result of the activities of the Amotekun Rangers in the forest, we were able to dismantle a terrible kidnap syndicate. And one of their armourers happened to be here today, and we have been arrested, and he has confessed to five major kidnap operations within the state.”

According to Adeleye, among those arrested are “a 21-year-old Sus Lugag, a 40-year-old Andrew, a 30-year-old Eze Chinedu, and Ime, Yahaya, and their local collaborator, Seun. They’re all suspected kidnappers.

“On human trafficking, we have one Ibrahim, 42, and we have one Agu Joseph, who is a jailbird that actually escaped from the Okitipupa Custodial Centre to commit another crime where Amotekun operatives picked him.

“On attempted robbery, we have a Kehinde, 30 years old, and Folarin, 36, and their collaborators are Aliu and Lukman, 28 and 25 years old, respectively.

As part of that robbery gang, we also have Mada, 25 years old.On the rape victim, we have Amos Kingsley, 29, and on the anti-open grazing violation in Akure North and Pelebe, Akure area, we were able to arrest Liman and Abubaka.”
