2023: South-South Youths Declare Support For Yahaya Bello Presidential Ambition

The South South Youth Progressive Council has unanimously endorsed the aspiration of Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Yahaya Bello, for President in the 2023 general election.

The endorsement was made in Benin recently in a meeting attended by over 1000 members drawn across 123 local government areas of the South South converge of which they publicly declared their assiduous intent.

In the declaration led by President of the group, Faith Idemudia, the group said Yahaya Bello remains
best man to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari, and even more importantly at such a critical time where young people across the country feel and in reality are marginalized from every aspect of governance.

Idemudia argued that the Nigeria youth ‌consists of 70% of the 200 million population and at such it is only reasonably justifiable for the youths to take the wheel this time around in view of the 2023 general elections. (Sic)

“We are ready to face our future confidently this time around and to that effect as the largest youth political group across the 123 local government areas we have unanimously endorsed the aspiration of Governor Yahaya Bello.

“This enormous endorsement is as a result of his high level performance, all inclusive government approach, youthful capabilities and achievements which can be evidently seen in his transformation of Kogi State. Women and Youth empowerment plays a key role in the agenda of Governor Yahaya Bello.

“He has successfully United the numerous ethnic groups in the state promoting peace and general well-being among the people, even being the first governor of the state to appoint a chief of staff that does not belong to the same ethnic group as him.

“In view of security, his administration has successfully reduced the tension in the state through assiduous and regular manhunt for kidnappers, robbers and other criminal elements and equally empowering security agencies across the state.

“This level of determination to security once earned him an award from the Inspector-General of Police, for his unprecedented and unflagging dedication to the security of the people of Kogi state.

“In the area of empowerment and equality very few governors can reach his milestone, just last year he was awarded the disability man of the year by people living with disability across Nigeria. He has more women and youth in government than any state in Nigeria.

“With regards to the aspect of Education, more than 1,000 teachers have been trained, while 120 classroom blocks have been renovated and 735 classroom blocks have been face-lifted. Also 35,000 customized desks and tables have been distributed to the three senatorial districts.

“All of these achievements are only to mention a few of the light that is shining across Kogi State. His excellency Governor Yahaya Bello has the internal drive, strength of a youth and passion to achieve great things and change the old narratives in Nigeria,” he said.

Idemudia stressed that Governor Yahaya Bello has the requisite prowess and administrative abilities to shape Nigerian society for a better future.

“The South South Youth threw their weight behind the Governor at their Mass Declaration on February 19th in Benin city with over 1000 members from across the six South South States,” he added.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole on Monday criticised former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, accusing him of poor judgment and misplaced priorities during his tenure in office.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oshiomhole said: “Rotimi Amaechi is the most terrible. Look at the choice of language. A guy who shut down Rivers judiciary because he wanted to appoint his own personal favourite as chief judge of Rivers State. Once he couldn’t have his way, the Rivers State judiciary was shut down for almost two years.

“Look at the crisis in the railway system that he superintendent over for eight unbroken years. He was unable to get the priorities right, playing to the gallery.

“Now he rather constructed a rail, not to Kano, not to Port Harcourt, where he came from, but to Niger Republic.

“Which goods are we sending to Niger Republic? He was a minister. And if you were a minister under Buhari, you will be fair to him, life or death, that Buhari gave anyone he appointed free hand to do the job he assigned to you. That is what Buhari was.”

The Southwest Governors Forum is set to create a South West Regional Security Fund to strengthen responses to insecurity in the region.

This initiative aims to address the rise in kidnapping, banditry, illegal mining, and unregulated interstate migration.

The decision was reached during a meeting of the six governors on Monday at the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Ibadan, Oyo State.

In the communiqué issued at the end, it was agreed that all six states would support coordinated operations, joint intelligence sharing, and rapid-response initiatives across Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states.

The governors also emphasised that the establishment of state police “can no longer be delayed.”

They applauded President Bola Tinubu for security interventions in states affected by kidnappings, while urging sustained attention on regional development.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress in Adamawa State, signalling a major development in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The registration took place on Monday, following Atiku’s announcement to ADC supporters and stakeholders in Adamawa over the weekend.

Abdul Rasheeth, an aide to the former vice president, had confirmed the development in a statement obtained by The PUNCH.

Videos and photos from the event showed Atiku’s convoy arriving in the town to the cheers of supporters, who beat drums, sang, and carried placards with his image.

Atiku waved and greeted well-wishers from his vehicle as he received his ADC membership card.

In a brief X (Formerly Twitter) post on his handle shorty after his registration, Atiku wrote,” It’s official. -AA”

This move formalises Atiku’s association with the coalition party, which he had previously endorsed in July as a platform for opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal, to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Until now, Atiku and other opposition leaders had delayed their formal registration with the ADC.

The former vice president’s registration is expected to strengthen the party’s profile and consolidate the opposition ahead of the next general election.
