27-yr-old Man Allegedly Rapes Wife’s 14-yr-old Sister

An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of a 27-year-old man, Ayeni Gbenga, in an Ado-Ekiti correctional centre for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is being tried for rape.

The prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between October and December in Ado-Ekiti.

Oriyomi said that the defendant defiled the girl who was his wife’s younger sister.

He said that whenever the defendant took the victim to her school, he would check in a hotel with her, stressing he had defiled her severally.

According to him, the offence contravenes Section 265 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant in a correctional centre, pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The plea of the defendant was, however, not taken.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, ordered the remand of the defendant in the correctional centre, pending issuance of legal advice.

He, thereafter, adjourned the case till January 27, 2025 for mention.

Police Warn Commuters As Bridge Collapses

The Kano State Police Command has alerted the public, particularly road users, that the Yaryasa bridge in Tudun Wada Local Government Area has collapsed due to heavy rainfall.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

The statement read, “This bridge serves as a critical link between Kano State and other states, including Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, and the eastern part of the country.

In the interest of public safety, the command has taken immediate measures to secure the area and prevent accidents: barricades, detours, and warning signage have been set up to redirect traffic and alert motorists to the hazard.

“The police officers from the Motor Traffic Division, along with personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kano Road and Traffic Agency, and members of the Transport Union, are on the ground to ensure smooth traffic management.

“The area around the collapsed bridge has been cordoned off to prevent vehicles from approaching the danger zone.”

The command advised motorists travelling towards Tudun Wada and beyond to cooperate with traffic officers and follow the designated alternative routes to avoid any risks to life and property.

The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, urged all road users “to exercise patience, adhere to traffic guidelines, and prioritise safety while navigating through affected areas,” the statement said.

The command also assured the public that it was working closely with relevant agencies to mitigate the impact of the situation, The PUNCH reports.

Suspect Arrested for Running Illegal Drink Factory In Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command said it had busted an illegal factory located in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state, producing fake soft drinks.

During the operations conducted by the operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, the police uncovered and dismantled several fake drinks branded as “Iyi Obeleagu Juice” and arrested one suspect found at the factory.

This was disclosed in a press statement released on Sunday by the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Ikenga stated that the products were being manufactured without the approval of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, and are considered highly harmful to the health of both adults and children.

The statement read in part, “Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, on September 3, 2025, uncovered and dismantled an illegal factory producing toxic fake soft drinks in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area.

“The operatives arrested one Chigozie Okafor, aged 48 years, in connection with the illicit act and recovered several fake juice drinks branded as “Iyi Obeleagu Juice”, which were being manufactured without approval from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

“The products are considered highly harmful to the health of both adults and children.”

According to him, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered a thorough investigation to track down other perpetrators and bring them to justice.

He said the CP further warned individuals engaging in such criminal activities to desist immediately, as the Command will not relent in safeguarding public health.

C’African Republic National Found Hanging In Lagos Apartment

A national of the Central African Republic, identified simply as Banteme, has been found hanging from a ceiling in his apartment located in the Ijede, Ikorodu area of Lagos State, in a circumstance suspected to be suicide.

According to The PUNCH, the incident occurred on Wednesday after his roommate had discovered Banteme’s lifeless body upon returning from work.

A counterinsurgency expert, Zagzola Makama, who shared some details of the incident on X, noted that the 23-year-old foreign national had left his office earlier in the day to prepare a meal at home but was later found hanging in the kitchen.

The roommate was said to have raised the alarm upon the discovery, and police were invited to the scene.

Makama tweeted, “A 23-year-old citizen of the Central African Republic has reportedly committed suicide at his residence in the Ijede area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

“The deceased, identified only as Banteme, was said to have been discovered by his roommate, Achil Doungo, on Wednesday at Anuoluwapo Estate, Phase 2, Igbelara.

“Neighbours and friends described the incident as shocking, adding that no note or message was left behind by the deceased to explain his action.”

He continued that the body of the deceased was evacuated and deposited at a morgue by the police.

“The body was evacuated to Ikorodu General Hospital, where it was confirmed dead and deposited in the morgue for autopsy by the police,” Makama stated.

Contacted for a reaction on Sunday, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the incident.

The DPRO noted that the friend of the deceased had reported to the police on Wednesday, after which the police visited the scene and evacuated the body.

“It is suspected to be a suicide case, but the police are still conducting an investigation,” Oluseyi said in a telephone interview with our correspondent.

The death of Banteme joins the growing trend of suicide across various communities in Nigeria.

THE PUNCH had reported last Thursday that the Anambra State Police Command rescued a man from attempted suicide after he climbed a high-tension pole in the Awada area of the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, had noted in a statement that upon receipt of the information, police operatives mobilised to the scene, cordoned off the area, and persuaded the victim.

The growing suicide trend has been blamed on the economic hardship ravaging the country and the resultant effect on the mental health of citizens.
