Bayern’s Fullback Davies Suffers ACL Injury, Ruled Out For Months

Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury that will rule him out of action for “several months,” the German club confirmed on Wednesday.
Alphonso Davies, who has made 31 appearances in all competitions for Bayern Munich this season, suffered the injury in his right knee and it would require a surgery.
The 24-year-old sustained the injury during Canada’s 2-1 Concacaf Nations League third-place play-off win over the United States on Sunday.
Similarly, Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano will also be sidelined for several weeks after picking up a knee problem on international duty with France.
“Unfortunately, during international breaks, there’s always the risk that players will return injured – this time it’s hit us particularly hard,” said Bayern sporting director Max Eberl.

“Our squad is strong and will compensate for these absences. We’ll now work even closer together. We have the quality to continue pursuing our big goals.”
Davies’ agent, Nedal Huoseh, claimed that the fullback was not initially set to start the match on Sunday due to a fitness issue stemming from the semifinals. However, he was named to the XI against the USMNT by Canada coach Jesse Marsch – and was injured early in the contest.
“I am very disappointed,” Huoseh said. “Alphonso was not 100 percent after the Mexico game and it was planned that he was not going to start against the USA. On Saturday night the expectation was he would not be in the XI. As a captain, I feel he was pressured to start the game by the coach. Alphonso is not the kind of guy to say no in those moments.

“He ended up playing and look what happened. Canada Soccer needs to do a better job managing these players, in my opinion. Alphonso is down and obviously really disappointed about this injury. Thankfully he is in wonderful hands with a world-class group at Bayern who will take great care of him. He is expected to have the surgery within the next 24 hours.”
Davies has made 226 appearances for Bayern since joining from Vancouver Whitecaps as a 17-year-old in 2018.

The Canadian signed a new five-year contract in February to end speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.
Upamecano has made 147 Bayern appearances since moving from RB Leipzig for a reported 42.5m euros (£38m) in 2021.
Bayern Munich are six points clear at the top of Bundesliga with eight games remaining as they chase a record-extending 34th German title.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have slipped one place in the latest FIFA World Rankings, falling from 44th to 45th globally while maintaining sixth position on the African continent.
The new rankings, released via FIFA’s official X handle on Thursday, reflect the team’s continued struggles under Coach Eric Chelle amid a stuttering 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
This marks a second consecutive decline after the Nigerian side dropped from 43rd to 44th in August and also slipped out of the top five nations in Africa on the back of poor outings in recent international matches.

Lesotho slipped to 153rd place, while Benin Republic, Nigeria’s upcoming opponent, climbed to 93rd. South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, who held the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw in June, rose to 55th, strengthening their bid for World Cup qualification.
Zimbabwe had the biggest slide down the ranking table, dropping nine places to 125th position in the world.

Edo State Sports Commission has expressed readiness to liaise with the state Ministry Education in giving the necessary backing to this year’s President Unity Cup and Chief of Naval Staff Tournament.
Executive Chairman of the commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, expressed the commission’s readiness on Wednesday when he played host to national leadership of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), led by its National Secretary, Mr. Patrick Okpavuerhe.
He expressed the commission’s readiness after the YSFON National Secretary requested Edo State to host this year’s President Unity Cup, scheduled for September 25 to October 1, 2025, or alternatively, the Chief of Naval Staff Tournament.
Represented by Executive Director representing Edo Central at the commission, Barr. Anthony Ikuenobe, Enabulele assured the YSFON members of the commission’s readiness to collaborate.

“The Commission will review past correspondences and liaise with the Ministry of Education to support these tournaments.
“Edo remains committed to youth and grassroots sports development,” Ikuenobe said.
Earlier, Okpavuerhe commended Hon. Enabulele for his remarkable strides in youth sports development, particularly Edo’s impressive record in grassroots football.
According to him, the decision of Edo to host any of the tournaments “was taken during our last Central Working Committee meeting in recognition of Edo’s outstanding contributions to grassroots sports.”

He explained that the President Unity Cup, first held in 1982 after former President Shehu Shagari donated the trophy, has become a platform to celebrate President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Nigeria’s independence through sports, fostering national unity.
Founded in 1965, YSFON also highlighted its successful organisation of the Under-14 Boys and Under-17 Girls Chief of Naval Staff Tournament, which has been held since 1999 but never hosted in Edo State.
“We are requesting Edo’s support in providing logistics upon approval. Our plan is to host the Chief of Naval Staff Tournament in Benin City, using the President Unity Cup as a test run,” Okpavuerhe added.
