Bundesliga: Kane, Guirassy Face Off As Bayern Host Stuttgart

Published

on

Reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich face a tough task to bounce back from last weekend’s humbling at Eintracht Frankfurt when they host surprise title challengers Stuttgart on Sunday.

The meeting with third-placed Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena will pit two of Europe’s form strikers against each other in Bayern’s Harry Kane and the visitors’ Serhou Guirassy.

Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern slipped four points behind early leaders Bayer Leverkusen, albeit with a game in hand, after their 5-1 thrashing by Frankfurt, with Stuttgart just one point further adrift and hoping to leapfrog their opponents in the table.

Kane has been a revelation for the Bavarian giants since joining in the summer from Tottenham, with 18 goals in 13 league matches.

Guirassy sits just behind the England captain with 16 goals from 12 Bundesliga appearances this term, already the 27-year-old’s best tally for a single season less than half the way through the campaign.

The Guinean boasts an even better goals-per-minute ratio than Kane, having scored a goal every 55 minutes, compared to the Bayern striker’s every 63 minutes.

Guirassy’s superb form has been key to Stuttgart’s stunning turnaround under coach Sebastian Hoeness.

Hoeness, who coached Bayern’s reserve team to a third-division title and is the nephew of former Bayern president Uli, took over Stuttgart in April, with the club sitting dead last and on course for relegation.

But a run of just two defeats in their final 12 games of last season in all competitions saw Hoeness take Stuttgart to the German Cup semi-finals and stay in the top flight with a two-legged relegation playoff victory over Hamburg.

The five-time German champions have gone from strength to strength under Hoeness this term, winning 13 of 17 matches.

They stayed in touch with the leaders thanks to a 1-1 draw with Leverkusen last Sunday.

Only Bayern and Borussia Dortmund have also taken points off Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten Leverkusen this season.

Bayern on the other hand equalled their worst loss in the league this century, although Kingsley Coman scored to help them bounce back with a 1-0 Champions League win at Manchester United on Tuesday.

France winger Coman injured his thigh, though, joining Serge Gnabry and Noussair Mazraoui on the sidelines.

Netherlands centre-back Matthijs de Ligt remains a doubt for Sunday but returned to training on Thursday.

They (Stuttgart) have got momentum, they’re a very good team who are growing together nicely under a top manager,” said Bayern captain Manuel Neuer.

“They’re a very serious opponent.”

Elsewhere this weekend, Leverkusen take on Frankfurt on Sunday, after fifth-placed Dortmund visit Augsburg and fourth-placed RB Leipzig host Hoffenheim on Saturday.

English teenager Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is in top form, a bright spark in an inconsistent Dortmund side.

Having overcome early-season injuries to string a run of several matches together, the 19-year-old has become one of Dortmund’s key creative players alongside Julian Brandt.

Bynoe-Gittens won some rare praise from compatriot Jude Bellingham, who backed his former Dortmund teammate to follow in his footsteps and win the Golden Boy award for the world’s best young player.

“He has faith in me and believes in me to do better for myself,” Bynoe-Gittens told the Bundesliga website.

Messi, Inter Miami Fight Back For 3-3 Draw At Philadelphia

Published

on

Inter Miami fought back from 3-1 down to grab a 3-3 draw at MLS Eastern Conference leaders the Philadelphia Union on Saturday thanks to a stoppage-time leveller from substitute Telasco Segovia.

Israeli forward Tai Baribo scored twice for Philadelphia to give them the two goal advantage but Lionel Messi gave Miami hope with an 87th-minute free-kick before Venezuelan Segovia dramatically grabbed the point.

Quinn Sullivan, called up this week by Mauricio Pochettino to the US national team squad, fired Philadelphia ahead in the seventh minute with a sweet strike after Miami’s defence had failed to close down.

Baribo made it 2-0 with an instinctive finish in the 44th minute as Miami’s defensive troubles continued.

The visitors got a foothold in the game in the 60th minute when Noah Allen floated in a cross from the left which was met by a firm header from Argentine Tadeo Allende.

But Philadelphia restored their two-goal cushion when, from a long throw, Miami were unable to clear and Jean-Jacques Danley pounced on the loose ball and Baribo fired home.

Messi beat Union keeper Andrew Rick with a characteristically well driven free-kick for his sixth goal of the season three minutes from the end of regulation time to set up a frantic finale.

Jovan Lukic hit the bar from inside the box early in stoppage time as Philly looked to wrap-up the win but they were left crestfallen in the fifth minute of stoppage time when, after good work from Messi, Segovia pounced and blasted home.

There was still time for one more chance but an unmarked Danley, who had an outstanding game in midfield, somehow headed wide from close range.

While the result was a welcome sign of character from Miami, they remain with just one win in their past eight games in all competitions having conceded 23 goals.

Javier Mascherano’s side are sixth in the Eastern Conference and the former Barcelona and Argentina midfielder praised his team’s response.

“We showed character, personality. It was another difficult start of the game for us because in the beginning we conceded the goal… but the guys showed they want want to fight to get out of this situation,” said the Miami coach.

We are in a bad trend, but with a lot of spirit to come back to be the team we were at the beginning of the season,” he added before demanding better from his back line.

We cannot concede every single corner kick and every single throw in and give opponents opportunities to score… we need to be more focused in those situations,” Mascherano said.

USA forward Patrick Agyemang had scored twice for Dean Smith’s Charlotte but Malte Amundsen looked to have earned the Columbus Crew a point before Spaniard Pep Biel grabbed a 75th-minute winner for a 3-2 triumph.

EPL Final Day: 5 Matches That Could Impact European Qualification

Published

on

As the English Premier League, EPL wraps up its season, the title race and relegation battle are long settled.

However, the race for European spots remains wide open — with Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League places still undecided.

Here are five key matches on the final day of the EPL that could shape who plays continental football next season:

1. Fulham v Manchester City

City need just a point to secure a Champions League spot. A win seals it, while a loss could open the door for teams below—especially if goal difference becomes a factor.

2. Manchester United v Aston Villa

Villa still have a slim chance at Champions League qualification but need to beat United and hope other results go their way. At minimum, they’ll be aiming to clinch a Europa League slot.

3. Newcastle v Everton

Newcastle are currently in the top five and in control of their Champions League fate. A win at home will ensure a return to Europe’s top competition. A draw might still be enough depending on other results.

4. Nottingham Forest v Chelsea

Forest, sitting seventh, host fifth-placed Chelsea in a massive showdown. A Forest win could see them leapfrog Chelsea, potentially knocking the Blues out of the European spots — depending on goal difference and other results. Nuno Santo’s side would require at least one of Newcastle or Aston Villa to lose their match against Everton and Man United, respectively to have a real chance of making it to the Champions League.

Meanwhile, if Enzo Maresca’s side draw with Nottingham Forest, they would either need Aston Villa to lose their match against Manchester United or Newcastle United to not win their match.l against Everton.

5. Tottenham v Brighton

With Spurs already guaranteed Champions League football via their Europa League win, Brighton are chasing a top-eight finish. They need at least a point to stay ahead of Brentford for a possible Conference League slot.

What’s at Stake?

Champions League: 3rd to 5th places still in contention
Europa League: 6th place assured; others depend on cup results
Conference League: Still up for grabs — especially if Brighton or Brentford finish 8th and Chelsea miss out

Real Madrid Get New Manager

Published

on

Real Madrid appointed Xabi Alonso to replace Carlo Ancelotti as coach on Sunday, with the Spaniard to take over from June 1 and lead the team at the Club World Cup.

“Xabi Alonso will be the Real Madrid coach for the next three seasons, from June 1, 2025 until June 30, 2028,” said Real Madrid in a statement.

With veteran Italian coach Ancelotti taking the reins of the Brazilian national team, Madrid secured a deal with former midfielder Alonso, whom they have been linked with for months.

Alonso, 43, leaves German side Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the Bundesliga season after finishing second.

Alonso is one of the biggest legends at Real Madrid and in world football,” continued Los Blancos’ statement.

Alonso will be officially presented on Monday at 1030 GMT.

The Spaniard coached Leverkusen to a league and German Cup double in the 2023-2024 campaign, with his team unbeaten in the top flight, making him a target for Europe’s top clubs.

Basque coach Alonso had an agreement with Leverkusen to allow him to depart if one of his former sides, including Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, wanted to hire him.

Ancelotti’s Madrid endured a disappointing campaign, winning the European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup but suffering Champions League quarter-final elimination by Arsenal.

Barcelona beat Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey finals and then reclaimed the Liga throne from their arch-rivals, meaning they failed to win a major trophy.

Madrid added French superstar Kylian Mbappe last summer but Ancelotti found it hard to include him in the team alongside Vinicius Junior without destabilising it.

Mbappe netted 31 La Liga goals which should earn him the European Golden Shoe, but Alonso’s main job will be to restore the team’s solidity without compromising the attack.

After losing two matches in the whole of the previous campaign, this season Madrid slumped to 14 defeats.

Alonso will replace one of the most successful managers in Madrid’s history, despite their struggles this season.

Ancelotti, 65, took Los Blancos to 15 trophies during two spells at the club, spanning six years.

The Italian won three Champions League trophies in Madrid, including La Decima — Madrid’s 10th — in 2014, with Alonso as part of his squad, although he was suspended for the final.

Alonso was also coached by Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Vicente del Bosque among others and is considered tactically adroit and an excellent organiser, which could be ideal for a Madrid side that has lacked balance.

The midfielder won two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup with Spain as he helped La Roja dominate the international game.

After retiring from playing in 2017 he coached Real Madrid and Real Sociedad at youth level before being appointed by Bayer Leverkusen in 2022.

Real Madrid have already signed defender Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth this summer and Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to follow, with his contract coming to an end at Anfield.

Madrid are trying to bring in the England international before the Club World Cup this summer, which will be Alonso’s first chance to win silverware.

Real Madrid face Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in Miami on June 18 in their opening match at FIFA’s lucrative summer tournament, which will be the first look at Alonso’s side.
