The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in Bauchi State on Wednesday commenced the production of 20,000 safety face masks for the masses in a move to contributing its quota toward the containment of the spread of the novel Coronavirus in the state.
Speaking during the commencement of the production exercise in Bauchi, Mr Nasir Argungu, the Director General of NDE, said the masks would be distributed to the people free of charge.
He added that the gesture was a collaboration between NDE and ‘Future Assured Initiative’, a Non-Governmental Organization of the first lady of Nigeria, Hajiya Aisha Buhari.
“One of the ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is the use of safety facemask, that is why the NDE and Future Assured Initiative come together to see that people are provided with face masks free of charge.
“We all know that NDE has trainers in various trades, therefore, we felt it’s necessary for us to assist this trainers as well as our trainees since we are in lockdown so as to keep them busy and at the end of the day, there is going to be an incentive for the production of the face masks,” said the Argungu.
The NDE boss who was represented by Mr Lawan Yaya, Bauchi state Coordinator of NDE, revealed that five states had also queued in for the production and each state was expected to produce 20,000 face masks.
The five states are: Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Jigawa and Kano states.
Argungu also advised the NDE trainees posted under the trainers engaged for the production of the face masks to put in their best in order to learn new inventions.
“If not because of this pandemic, nobody was thinking of sowing this kind of face masks, but with this Coronavirus, it is now a thriving business to produce face masks.
“Therefore, it is an eye opener for them, maybe after the training they will be able to go to the market, buy the materials and start sowing so as to make ends need,” he said.
Also speaking, Mrs Halima Muhammed, who spoke on behalf of the trainers engaged for the production of the face masks, said they would all put in their best and ensure that the masks were produced flawlessly.
