EDOCSO Says No To Cult Killings, Organises Enlightenment Rally In Benin

Apparently worried by the incessant court related killings in Edo State, Benin City in particular, members of the Edo Civil Society Organisations, EDOCSO, on Friday embarked on a peaceful rally against cultism, with a view to sensitising and enlightening members of the public particularly the younger ones on the danger of the menace.
The civil society organisation members who walked through the popular King Square and other adjoining streets in Benin metropolis, carried placard with inscriptions as: ‘Let’s stop killing ourselves: we are one; stop the WAR of colour; stop the confra killings; this colour madness must stop.’
The peaceful rally which halted vehicular movement for hours in the King Square and other adjoining streets had anti-cultism music blaring through loud speakers.
Speaking at the enlightenment rally, Interim Technical Executive Council (TEC) Chairman, EDOCSO, Comrade Austin Enabulele, said the rally became imperative due to the incessant cult related killings in the state Benin in particular.
According to him, cultism does no good to anyone or society, rather, it reduces population of any society where cultism is rife due to the killings.
While calling on those who are already involved in cultism and ready to denounce it but do not know how to go about it, to approach EDOCSO, assuring that such denouncement would be made without endangering such person’s life.

“Anyone who is already into cultism and is ready to denounce it, should come to us, we will help such person and such denouncement would be made without any danger, we are here to help as many that want to take exit from cultism.”

Drama As Kanu Lists Danjuma, Wike, Sanwo-Olu As Witnesses

The detained leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, made a dramatic turn on Tuesday by informing the Federal High Court in Abuja that he was ready to open his defence.
This came just hours after Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, led protests in parts of Abuja demanding Kanu’s release.
Kanu had, last Thursday, filed a preliminary objection challenging the court’s jurisdiction to continue his trial.
The objection came on the same day a team of medical experts appointed by the court declared him medically fit to stand trial, Channels reports.

In a fresh motion personally filed on Tuesday, October 21, Kanu told the court that he was prepared to begin his defence “pursuant to the order of this honourable court made on the 16th day of October 2015, directing the defendant to commence his defence on the 24th day of October 2025.”
He disclosed plans to call 23 witnesses divided into two categories, “ordinary but material witnesses” and “vital and compellable witnesses”, the latter to be summoned under Section 232 of the Evidence Act, 2011.
The motion, which Kanu personally signed, suggested that he may have disengaged his legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Kanu Agabi.
He also requested 90 days to conclude his defence due to the number of witnesses he intends to call.

Kanu stated that he would testify on his own behalf, “providing a sworn account of the facts, denying the allegations, and explaining the political context of his statements and actions.”
Among those listed as “compellable witnesses” were former Minister of Defence, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd); former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd); Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma.
Others include the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Minister of Works, Dave Umahi; and former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.
Kanu also listed former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN); former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar; and Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, among others whose identities he withheld.

Kanu pledged to submit sworn statements from all voluntary witnesses and to notify the prosecution within a reasonable time.
He assured the court that “no precious time of the honourable court would be delayed,” adding that “justice must not only be done but be manifestly seen to have been done.”
Meanwhile, on the same day Kanu filed his motion, a magistrate court in Abuja ordered the remand of his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and 12 others arrested during protests demanding his release.

The police charged the 13 defendants with criminal conspiracy, disobedience of a lawful order, inciting disturbance, and disturbance of public peace — offences contrary to sections 152, 114, and 113 of the Penal Code Law.
Those named in the first two information reports include Ejimakor, Kanu’s brother Emmanuel, Joshua Emmanuel, Wilson Anyalewechi, Okere Kingdom Nnamdi, Clinton Chimeneze, Gabriel Joshua, Isiaka Husseini, Onyekachi Ferdinand, Amadi Prince, Edison Ojisom, Godwill Obioma, and Chima Onuchukwu.
The magistrate, after briefly standing down the case, ordered their remand at Kuje Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter till October 24 for arraignment.

Delta: Police Officer Arrested Over Shooting Incident

The Delta State Police Command has condemned in strong terms the unprofessional conduct of a police officer caught on video shooting at a moving vehicle in Asaba, describing the act as “reckless, unjustified, and contrary to the ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.”
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, confirmed that the officer involved in the viral incident has been identified, summoned, and detained at the command headquarters.
Edafe said, “After a careful examination of the video clip, it is clear that the policeman acted in an unprofessional manner, unbecoming of a police officer. The command condemns his act in totality, as no policeman has the right to use his firearm without recourse to Force Order 237.”

He stated that preliminary findings revealed the officer was responding to a hit-and-run incident, but stressed that this did not justify his use of a firearm.
“No policeman is allowed to use his firearm without proper justification, as stipulated in Force Order 237,” Bright reiterated.
He said the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olufemi Abaniwonda, had reportedly ordered immediate internal disciplinary action against the erring officer, assuring that the matter would be handled in strict accordance with the Police Act and regulations.

“The officer concerned will be dealt with in line with extant laws to serve as a deterrent to others. The protection of lives and property remains the top priority of the command,” he added.
Public reaction to the viral clip has been one of outrage, with civil society groups and rights advocates calling for transparency in the disciplinary process and demanding that the Nigeria Police Force adopt stronger accountability measures against the misuse of firearms.
Bright Edafe, however, urged members of the public to remain calm and report any case of police abuse or unprofessional conduct for prompt action.

Recently, the command intercepted a large cache of live ammunition allegedly destined for Edo State, and separately arrested a notorious drug dealer operating within the Warri axis.
Edafe told The Guardian on Sunday that operatives of the ‘C’ Division, Asaba, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Ogbe Emmanuel, made the interception on 16 October 2025, at about 12:00 p.m. during a routine surveillance and stop-and-search operation at the Head Bridge, Asaba.
According to him, the team reportedly flagged down a Toyota Hiace Hummer Bus with registration number NGK 16 XB, driven by one Ozoemenam Sylvanus.
The driver’s suspicious behaviour prompted officers to conduct a detailed search of the vehicle — a decision that paid off when 400 live cartridges were discovered concealed within the bus.
