Chigozie Matthew, 30, was Tuesday remanded in Oko Correctional Centre, Benin City, by a Magistrate Court for raping a 17-year-old minor.
Chief Magistrate, (Mrs) Adamaigbo Dorothy presided over the case.
Police prosecutor, Sgt. Ifidon Daniel, told the Court that the accused committed the offence sometimes January 6, 2020.
He said that the offence was committed at Okey Golden Hotel, at Nomayo street, upper Sakponba road, Benin, in the Ikpoha-Okhai Magisterial district.
He argued that the offence contravened section 357 and punishable under section 358 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48, volume aII, laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976, as applicable in Edo State.
He said, “The accused on the same date did unlawfully had canal knowledge of a teenager, aged 17 years, thereby committed the unbailable offence.”
He further argued that granting the accused person bail will jeopardize investigation.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read in court.
The Chief Magistrate therefore adjourned the case until March 25, for hearing.
Accroding to the law of the land, any person found guilty of rape is liable to imprisonment for live, with or without bail.
