Naira Redesign: Wike Hails Supreme Court, Says Rivers Will Join Suit Against FG

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has commended the Supreme Court for saving Nigerians and democracy by restraining the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, from implementing the February 10 deadline on the phasing out of N200, N500 and N1000 old notes.

Wike spoke during the Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign in the Abua/Odual Local Government Area, where he urged the people to preserve their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to vote for the candidates of the PDP at the state level.

He also commended the government of the three states that filed the suit.

He said the Rivers State Government will join the suit against the Federal Government, noting that the PDP in the state is not in support of the policy.

The governor stressed that the Supreme Court has through the decision, proven that the judiciary is the hope of the common man.

Edo State Deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, has been declared winner of a parallel primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held at his official resident, Government Avenue, Benin City.

The returning officer of the primary, Hon. Moses Bartholomew declared him winner having polled over 301 votes.

LP National Chairman, Abure Released

The National Chairman of Labour Party (LP), has been released by Zone 5 headquarters, Benin of the Nigeria Police.

Abure was arrested on Wednesday evening by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), in charge of Zone 5, Benin City.

Abure, it was gathered was released around 3.05 am on Thursday.

The AIG on Wednesday night disclosed that the LP National Chairman, the Edo State chairman of the party, Kelly Ogbaloi and three others, were arrested for “conspiracy, brutal assault, attempted murder, armed robbery, grievous harm and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.”

Speaking to some of his supporters who were at the AIG Zone 5 headquarters shortly after his release, Abure stated that what he suffered is peculiar to what other freedom fighters suffer all over the world.

He added that his release by the police was effected by pressure mounted on them from some quarters which he did not name, adding that assurances were given that the state chairman, state publicity secretary and other arrested alongside with him would be released in the early hours of Thursday.

Abure, who berated the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), for making life unbearable for Nigerians disclosed that since the February 2023 general elections, detractors of the LP had not relented in instigating crises within the party, adding that several petitions bothering on frivolous accusations had been written against him.

He assured that neither he, nor the party, would be deterred from pursuing the goals of the party.

Edo PDP Primary: Tight Security As Accreditation Begins

Security has been beefed up at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, venue of the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship primary election.

On Thursday morning, motorists were not allowed into the stadium road as men of the Edo State Traffic Management Authority scrutinised every vehicle intending to use the road to gain entrance into the stadium.

Policemen were stationed along the road while many others were at the entrance of the stadium ensuring that only those who have business there were allowed in.

On Wednesday, the police, through its spokesman, Chidi Nwabuzor, said the crises which occurred at the All Progressives Congress primary election on Saturday was an eye-opener and the police authority will no longer treat such election as just a party affair.

He said, “You could remember that we had just a little hitch of a particular party delegate election. That has been an eye-opener to Edo State Police Command that we should no longer see it as a party affair.

“The delegates are people with diverse interests, people with diverse behaviours, people with different attitudes and characters. So, this time around, we are going to ensure that the right thing is done and protect the lives and property of these party members.

“The Nigerian Police, Edo State Command is ready to ensure that there is a peaceful, hitch-free delegate election cutting across political parties in the state.

“The Commissioner of Police has adequately deployed officers and men for the exercise and we believe that with the number of officers, the calibre of officers he has deployed for this exercise, we are not hoping to see any form of violence or civil disobedience.

“The vigilante will not be part of the election process, be it a state election or general election. They are a state-owned security outfit, so we cannot take the risk of having them around in this kind of important assignment.”

Ten aspirants vying for the PDP governorship ticket in the state will test their popularity at the primaries today as 563 delegates nominate the party candidate for the September 21 governorship election.

The candidates include Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, former chairman of Sterling Bank, Asue Ighodalo, Former Edo State All Progressives Congress chairman, Anslem Ojezua, former House of Representatives member, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, Felix Akhabue, Amb. Martin Uhomoibhi, Hafia Hadizat Umoru,. Omosede Igbinedion, Earl Osaro Onaiwu and Arthur Esene, will be hoping to clinch the ticket despite protests from nine of the aspirants who felt that the delegate election was skewed in favour of Ighodalo.

The election will be carried out according to guidelines released by the party on Wednesday.

As of the time of filling this report, accreditation was ongoing at Edo Hotel Marquee at the Government Reservation Area, Benin.
