NSF: Ogun Gov Cheers Athletes, Pledges Millions For Medals

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun has announced cash rewards for athletes representing the state at the 22nd National Sports Festival, which the state is hosting.

During a morale-boosting visit to the state’s contingent at the games village in Babcock University on Saturday, May 17, the governor revealed the incentive package in a bid to further motivate them to excel at the multi-sport event.

According to the governor, each athlete will receive ₦2.5m for winning gold medal, ₦1.5m for silver, and ₦1m for bronze.

In addition, all participating athletes for the state will receive a sum of ₦50,000 for qualifying.

According to The PUNCH, the governor made the announcement while addressing athletes and officials at the cafeteria hall within the games village.

He was accompanied by the Director General of the National Sports Commission Bukola Olopade, Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Wasiu Isiaka, Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, and other top government functionaries.

Assuring the athletes of his commitment to fulfilling the promises, Abiodun said he would ensure the incentives are delivered in full.

“I’m not a professional politician, I’m a professional in politics, so all the promises will be kept,” he said.

The festival officially commenced on Friday with the arrival of contingents from across the federation in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Ogun is hosting the prestigious competition for the second time, following the Gateway Games 2006.

This year’s edition will run from May 16 to 30, with events spread across Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ikenne, and Ijebu-Ode.

Super Eagles players and coaches have refused to travel to Marrakech due to unpaid bonuses.

This was revealed by BBC Africa journalist, Oluwashina Okeleji, who is in Morocco.

Nigeria are billed to take on Algeria in the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday evening.

But it is understood they have not paid their bonuses for the four matches they have played.

Eric Chelle’s men beat Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in the group fixtures, before they thrashed Mozambique 4-0 in the Round of 16.

They have taken the decision not to travel or train anymore until the bonuses issue is resolved.

AFCON: Osimhen Threatens To Dump Super Eagles, Return To Galatasaray

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, reportedly threatened to quit the national team and return to Turkey.

According to Arise News, Osimhen was left fuming following his altercation with Ademola Lookman during the 4-0 win over Mozambique at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations on Monday.

Having scored a brace thanks to assists from Lookman, the 27-year-old lashed out at his team-mate for failing to pass to him in the 64th minute.

Osimhen then beckoned on the bench asking to be taken off, before he was replaced by Moses Simon.

He was then pacified by senior officials of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF.

NPFL Announces Resumption Date For Second Stanza

The Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, has announced a date for the start of the second stanza of the 2025-26 season.

The second stanza will commence on Wednesday, 14 January, 2026.

The fixture will start with mid-week games across all the designated NPFL centers.
