Police Arrest 10 Suspects Over FUOYE Student’s Death

The Ekiti State Police Command, on Thursday, said it had arrested 10 suspects in connection to the death of a student of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Modupe Deborah.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abutu Sunday, made the announcement via the command’s handle on X (formerly Twitter).

Sunday added that the late 200-level nursing student of the institution was declared missing within the school premises on 5/09/2023.

The PRO stated that Deborah’s body was found in a shallow grave at a distance of about 30 meters behind the nursing Lecture Hall.

Sunday said, “This is to inform the general public that the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, CP Ogundare Dare, has ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the death of one Atanda Modupe Deborah, a 200-level nursing student of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), who was declared missing within the school premises on 5/09/2023 but found dead in a shallow grave at a distance of about 30 meters behind the nursing Lecture Hall.”

He promised that the police would ensure the perpetrators of the crime face the full wrath of the law.

“While appealing to everyone to be calm, the commissioner vows that the command will do everything possible to unearth the identity of the perpetrator(s) and ensure they are made to face the full wrath of the law.

“Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy while 10 suspects are currently in custody undergoing investigation.”

Earlier, the school management announced the death of the student in a statement signed by the Registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim.

Ibrahim said, “It will be recalled that earlier today, the Management had made public the disturbing development of the missing of the deceased and assured that investigation was ongoing as to unravel the whereabouts of the poor students.

“But current information reaching the security outfit of the University has disclosed that the said student is dead.

“While the University Management condoles with the deceased family and the generality of the University community, particularly our dear students, the Management reiterated that investigation is still ongoing and this is being done in collaboration with national security agencies to get to the root of the sad development and bring to book the culprits.”

Man Trailed, Shot Dead In Abuja

A young man identified as Khalid Bichi, was on Friday night, May 10, shot dead by yet to be identified persons.

According to reports, Khalid was trailed by the men who shot him dead in the Maitama area of Abuja

The deceased was a staff of FIRS with social media X handle @Khalid_Bichi, was on his way to get food when the unfortunate incident happened. He was rushed to Maitama General Hospital where he eventually died.

Confirming the incident to LIB, the spokesperson of the command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the matter is currently being investigated and that efforts are being made to apprehend the killers.

Tanker Explosion Rocks Lagos, Two Burnt To Death

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has disclosed that two men died in a tanker explosion which occurred on Friday night at the Ijesha end of the Cele link-bridge in Surulere area of the state.

The LSFRS Director, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, adding that firefighters responded swiftly to the distress call to extinguish the fire..

The statement partly read, “At approximately 23:12hrs emergency services were alerted to a tanker truck, carrying 33k litres of petrtol, losing control while navigating the roundabout to ascend the bridge. The subsequent spillage ignited into a large fire, engulfing the surrounding area.

“Prompt action by the Isolo and Bolade Fire Stations of the agency, contained the inferno, preventing further escalation.

“Regrettably, two male individuals were discovered deceased, their bodies tragically burnt beyond recognition and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, overseeing the necessary procedures. The Lagos State Ambulance Service also provided vital assistance throughout the operation.”

Adeseye added that efforts are underway to clear the wreckage of the involved vehicles from the road, to ensure free flow of traffic and to enable investigative procedures.

The PUNCH reported in April that five people were confirmed dead and over 70 cars burnt in a tanker explosion at the Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State.

The incident was reported to have followed the collision between a petrol-laden tanker and a heavy-duty truck, spilling the content of the tanker which burst into flames.

Kogi University Lecturer Stripped Over Alleged Sexual Harassment

A lecturer at Federal University in Lokoja, Kogi state, on Friday, May 10, was stripped near naked over allegations of sexual harassment of a female student.

The lecturer whose full name is yet to be ascertained, incurred the wrath of some other female undergraduates of the English Department, where he teaches. They insisted that he must be publicly ‘disgraced’, claiming that ‘his cup was full’.

The lecturer who was stripped to his boxers, was saved from further embarrassment by the combined efforts of the school security unit, at the Adankolo mini campus of the institution.

The Nation reported that during the interrogation, the lecturer implicated his colleagues, including the Head of the Department (HOD), claiming that they usually provide him with names of female students to either “pass or fail” based on their level of intimacy or absence with them.

When contacted, the school’s spokesperson, Daniel Iyke, said that the management is aware of the development and had immediately set up machinery to investigate the case.

Iyke said: “The thing is that the university has its own internal mechanism in taking care of it.

“The report has been brought to the attention of the vice-chancellor, and he has set up a body to look into it. This was done immediately and the report or outcome will be made known as soon as it comes out. At this point, this is all I can volunteer.”
