Barely a month a middle-aged lifeless body, who was suspected to have been kiiled by armed robbers, was found along Lagos street, Benin, an Inspector of Police with the Edo State Police Command’s Anti Cultism Unit, Mohammed Hameed was on Wednesday night killed.
It was learnt that the Police officer was said to be in a patrol with other officers when the hoodlums opened fire on them, killing him at the spot which made other police officers who were in the patrol to open fire on the robbers, killing one (armed robber) in retaliation.
It was gathered that the policemen on patrol got a distress call that some suspected armed robbers snatched a car around the King’s Square in the city and headed towards the said street which made the braved policemen responded swiftly and pursued the hoodlums towards the direction.
According to information gathered, upon sighting the police, the hoodlums opened fire into the patrol van and killed Inspector Mohammed Hameed who led the response team.
The Police Spokesperson in the state, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, could not react to the incident as several calls put across to his mobile phone were unanswered, neither did he returned call.
Edo State Benin City in particular has witnessed series of killings in recent times ranging from supremacy battle amongst rival cult groups which resulted to broad day killings, armed robbery killings, amongst others.
