The trial of former Director of Finance in the defunct President Goodluck Jonathan’s Campaign Organization, Dr Ngozi Olejeme, in an alleged N3bn fraud was on Monday in Abuja stalled due to an acute diabetes ailment suffered by the defendant.
Justice Maryam Hassan Aliyu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) shifted the trial to December 6 following a passionate plea by her counsel, Mr Paul Erokoro SAN to that effect.
When the trial was to commence, Erokoro told the Judge that doctors to Mrs Olejeme have called her to report immediately to the hospital as she has fainting spells.
The senior lawyer recalled that the defendant has been diabetic and hypertensive for 30 years and has had four major surgeries in the United States of America and South Africa.
He further hinted to the court that she recently suffered heart failure and COVID-19 and is still in the recovery process.
Moved by the plight of the defendant and due to no objection to request for adjournment, Justice Aliyu fixed December 6 for resumption of the trial.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC had on October 21 arraigned Mrs Olejeme on a nine-count charge, in which she was accused of abusing her office, receiving a bribe, awarding contracts without due process, among others.

Mrs Olejeme who was a former Chairman of the Board of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) was on October 22 admitted bailing by the Judge after spending 24 hours in the custody of the EFCC on the order of the court.
Justice Aliyu adopted the conditions attached to the administrative bail earlier granted Olejeme by the prosecuting agency, EFCC in 2017 to admit her to bail.
The conditions are that the defendant produces two Deputy Directors in government employment to stand as her sureties.
In one of the counts, Mrs Olejeme was alleged to have “dishonestly received the sum of N22,200,000.00” from a contractor with NSITF into her personal account No. 32327505058110 at GT Bank.
Mrs Olejeme was also accused of receiving $48,485,127.00, which was dollars equivalent to some funds received from contractors as kickback

Falana, Others Slam Okpebholo As Edo Movement Ban On Obi Sparks Reactions, Controversy

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo’s remarks on Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has stirred controversy and reactions.
Recall that Okpebholo had last week Friday at a rally warned Obi to obtain security clearance before visiting Edo State.
The statement by the governor has been described by critics as a direct threat to Obi’s life and a dangerous precedent for democracy.
Reacting to the statement, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), urged Obi to take legal action over what he termed an “illegal threat.”
Earlier on Sunday, Falana had asked Okpebholo to withdraw the threats to the life of Obi.

In a statement, the senior lawyer noted that the threat to the life of Obi issued by the “new sheriff in town” in Edo State constituted a violation of Section 33 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended and Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples (Ratification and Enforcement), which guarantee the fundamental right of every citizen to life.
“However, if Governor Okpebholo does not withdraw the illegal threat because of sheer arrogance of raw power, Mr Peter Obi should proceed to file an application in the Benin Judicial Division of the Federal High Court to secure the enforcement of his fundamental right to life.
“Mr Obi should act with utmost urgency in view of the prevalence of mob justice and other forms of extrajudicial killings in the country,” the statement added.
On their part, the African Democratic Congress and the Obidient Movement, accused Okpebholo of intimidation and spreading falsehoods.
The ADC’s interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, speaking with journalists, warned that such threats were becoming a troubling trend among APC governors.
He stressed that the party was informing both Nigerians and the international community about the situation, against the right to move freely across all states by every Nigerian.
“The African Democratic Congress condemns the restriction order issued on Peter Obi.
“This is not the first time. It is becoming a pattern for APC governors to make the kind of pronouncements credited to Governor Okpebholo, declaring that Mr Obi or opposition leaders are not welcome in their state.
“This is not democratic, and it’s a very dangerous pattern. Nigeria is a free country, and every citizen of Nigeria has the right to go anywhere in this country.
“We don’t need a visa in our country. We don’t need anybody’s permission to go to any part of our country.

“This also speaks to an authoritarian instinct among some of these governors of the APC, and we believe that this can only get worse if it’s not nipped in the bud,” he added.
Abdullahi said, having failed to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, the strategy is to begin to intimidate and issue threats and warnings not to come to their states.
“This is unacceptable. We will go anywhere in Nigeria that we want because Nigeria is a free country,” he said.
The Edo State government has, however, insisted that the governor’s comments at a rally on Friday were misinterpreted, stressing that his call was a security protocol and not hostility toward the opposition leader.

I’m Burdened By Suffering, Deprivation In Nigeria — Peter Obi

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, said on Sunday that he is more burdened by the scale of “suffering” and “deprivation” among Nigerians than celebrating his 64th birthday, which took place on Saturday.
He recommended that to address the situation, leaders should apply public funds for the “public good.”
Obi took to his X handle to express gratitude to all those who wished him well at 64, saying that though he had rarely celebrated his birthdays, he couldn’t afford not to express appreciation for the momentous show of love.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra, gave specific examples of how funds donated for his birthday in the past were sacrificed to provide needed facilities to serve the people as opposed to using the money for his personal comfort.
He wrote, “Recall vividly when I turned 50, during my time as Governor. Many institutions and individuals approached me with elaborate plans for the occasion.

“One institution generously offered to build a house for me in the village. When I asked for the estimated cost, they said it would be ₦120 million. I humbly requested that the funds be redirected to build classrooms in three educational institutions at Agulu, Ekwulobia and Abatete. They obliged—and the impact was far-reaching.
“Another group had budgeted ₦20 million for a lavish party. I graciously asked them to consider using the funds to purchase desktop computers for schools. Their eventual donation of 200 desktops was distributed to schools across the state, enhancing learning for many students.
“In a similar spirit of redirection, another organisation, whose intention had originally been to celebrate me, ended up donating buses, which we distributed to institutions in need, including one that went to the legendary Old Rangers Association.
“This has been my consistent approach over the years. On each birthday, I use the opportunity to redirect goodwill towards causes that uplift others.”
The former presidential candidate recalled that on Saturday, the day of his 64th birthday, his thoughts were more about the current state of affairs in the country and not himself.
He said, “As I turned 64 years old yesterday, I must confess that the current state of our nation makes the idea of personal merriment even more difficult to contemplate. The scale of suffering and deprivation among our people weighs heavily on the conscience.
“This is why I have once again requested that all those who wish to celebrate me should instead channel their resources towards helping the poor or supporting our struggling health and educational institutions.”
He added that on his part, he had chosen to renew his commitment to continue supporting the institutions of state in the best way he could, especially those that directly served the people.

Obi further stated, “Providentially, I was in Rome, at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs, and my birthday coincided with this visit.
“I used this sacred opportunity, as I always do when I am in Nigeria, to remember you all in prayer. I especially prayed for our beloved country, Nigeria, that God may touch the hearts of our leaders, and awaken in them the realisation that public funds are meant for the public good.
“May we all find strength and grace to keep striving for a more just, compassionate, and equitable society.”

The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarrett Tenebe, has backed the state governor’s stance on Peter Obi, insisting that the 2023 Labour Party’s presidential candidate must seek security clearance before entering the state.
Tenebe said the warning said the warning to Obi by the state governor was prompted by security concerns stemming from his (Obi) previous visit to Edo.
According to Tenebe, the last time Obi came to Edo, the visit led to the death of three people.
“The party believes the governor was right in warning Peter Obi to get security clearance before coming into the state because of the opinion people have about him here, especially considering that during his last visit, three people were killed,” Tenebe stated.
He made the remarks shortly after the APC announced Joseph Ikpea and Omosede Igbinedion as the party’s candidates for the Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency, respectively.
Tenebe also vowed that the APC would run an intense campaign ahead of the 2024 governorship election to assert that it was the rightful winner of the last election.
“Now that we have our candidates, we will hit the ground running. We are going to campaign as if we have never won elections in this state. We want to let the people know that we actually won the last governorship election,” he added.
