We’ve Constructed Over 700kms Of Internal Roads In Edo, Says Commissioner

Published

on

The Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration in Edo State has constructed over seven hundred (700km) kilometres of internal roads since inception.

The state Commissioner for Roads and Bridges, Engr. Ethan Uzamere, disclosed this during an interactive session with newsmen in Benin on Thursday.

He said people who say the present government has not done much in road construction make such accusations just because the roads constructed by the government are probably not in their right of way.

He said: “We have done more than 700 kilometres of internal roads since inception. But if these internal roads are not in your right of way how would you know. We just concluded the Second Ugbor Road, but if this road is not in your right of way you will not have an idea. We are on the verge of completing Forestry Road, but if your right of way is not there you can’t know. We have many to list, but that will be made known in our media project.

“So, It is unfair to say the state government is doing nothing as regards road construction. I must say that as a state, based on the budget given to us, we are doing a lot of internal roads.”

The Commissioner who lamented that cost of raw materials for road construction have gone up astronomically, however, maintained that roads in the state must be done to specification so that it can stand the test of time.

Uzamere used the opportunity to call on the Federal Government to concentrate more of its road infrastructural projects to the state because of its peculiarity.

According to him, the call becomes necessary due to the strategic location of the state.

He said being a major gateway to many parts of the country, the volume of vehicles, especially the articulated ones, is bound to be high, resulting in the wearing and tearing of the roads in the state.

On Benin-Agbor Road, he said a consensus agreement has been reached between the Federal Government and the state government on its rehabilitation, assuring that work will soon commence on the road.

The Commissioner, while noting that the state government is carrying out palliative measures on several federal roads, added: “Delta State is part of the consensus. Rehabilitation of the road is going to take off any moment from now. We are presently doing some designs of the road. We already have the finance to get it done.”

Missing N128bn: SERAP Demands Probe Into Power Ministry, NBET Expenditures

Published

on

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately order an investigation into allegations that more than N128 billion in public funds is missing or has been diverted from the Federal Ministry of Power and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc. (NBET), Abuja.

The allegations are contained in the latest annual report of the Auditor-General of the Federation, published on September 9, 2025, which highlighted multiple cases of financial irregularities, undocumented payments, ents and suspected diversion of public funds across both institutions.

In a letter dated January 3, 2026, and signed by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation called on President Tinubu to direct the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, alongside relevant anti-corruption agencies, to promptly probe the findings and ensure accountability.

SERAP stressed that any individual found culpable should be prosecuted where sufficient admissible evidence exists, while all missing or diverted funds should be fully recovered and paid back into the national treasury.

The group further urged the president to deploy any recovered funds to address the deficit in the 2026 budget and help ease Nigeria’s growing debt burden.

According to SERAP, Nigerians continue to bear the consequences of entrenched corruption in the power sector, which has contributed to persistent electricity shortages, frequent transmission line failures and unreliable power supply nationwide.

The organisation argued that addressing corruption in the sector would significantly improve access to regular and uninterrupted electricity.

The civil society group described the allegations as a grave breach of public trust and a violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Nigeria’s anti-corruption laws and international obligations, including the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

Detailing the audit findings, SERAP noted that the Ministry of Power failed to account for over N4.4 billion transferred to the Mambilla, Zungeru and Kashimbilla project accounts, with no evidence provided on how the funds were utilised.

The Auditor-General expressed fears that the money may have been diverted and recommended its recovery.

The report also revealed that the ministry paid over N95 billion to contractors for various projects without documentation or proof that the projects existed or were executed.

Additionally, more than N33 million was reportedly spent on foreign travels for the minister and aides to attend international events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai without required approvals from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation or the Head of Civil Service.

Further concerns were raised over unaccounted expenditures, including over N230 million on the GIGMIS platform and more than N282 million paid as non-personal advances to staff beyond statutory limits, all without adequate documentation.

At NBET, the Auditor-General uncovered multiple cases of irregular contract awards and payments. These include over N427 million in contracts awarded without evidence of procurement advertisements, more than N7.6 billion transferred into purported sub-accounts of unnamed beneficiaries, and over N9.3 billion paid to Egbin Power Plc without documents to authenticate the transactions.

The audit also cited payments exceeding N8 billion made without proper record-keeping, over N420 million paid to ineligible consultants without evidence of services rendered, and more than N1.1 billion spent as extra-budgetary expenditure without approval from the Minister of Finance or the National Assembly.

Other questionable expenditures highlighted include payments for vehicles without due process, unapproved legal fees, undocumented staff welfare packages, and consultancy services not captured in approved budgets.

SERAP warned that if decisive action is not taken within seven days of the receipt or publication of its letter, the organisation would consider legal steps to compel the government to act in the public interest.

Citing constitutional provisions, SERAP reminded President Tinubu that Section 15(5) of the Constitution mandates the abolition of corrupt practices, while Section 16 obliges the government to ensure that the nation’s resources are managed to promote the welfare and happiness of all citizens.

Reps Release Four Tax Acts For Public Records

Published

on

The House of Representatives, under the leadership of the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, on Saturday released four tax reform Acts duly signed into law by President Bola Tinubu for public record, verification, and reference.

The four Acts released are: the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025; the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025; the National Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025; and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act, 2025.

The House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, who confirmed this in a statement made available to Parliamentary Correspondents, explained that the Ad-hoc Committee, chaired by Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, is expected to continue its work in line with its mandate to determine the circumstances surrounding the circulation of unauthorised versions of the Tax Acts and to recommend measures to prevent a recurrence and preserve the authenticity and reliability of parliamentary records.

Speaker Tajudeen, in concert with the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, directed the immediate release of the Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the Acts, including the endorsement and assent pages signed by the President, following public concerns and allegations regarding purported alterations and the circulation of unauthorised and misleading versions of the laws.

This decisive intervention underscores Speaker Abbas’ long-standing commitment to transparency, legislative integrity, and public confidence in the law-making process.

“Indeed, the attention of the House was drawn to the existence of inconsistent versions of the tax laws in circulation after a vigilant Honourable Member identified discrepancies, raised the alarm, and formally reported the matter to the House on a point of privilege.

“Acting promptly, the Speaker ordered an internal verification and the immediate public release of the certified Acts to eliminate doubt, restore clarity, and protect the sanctity of the legislative record,” the House Spokesman noted.

According to him, from the initiation of the tax reform process through extensive stakeholder consultations, committee scrutiny, rigorous clause-by-clause consideration, robust plenary debates, and eventual passage, Speaker Tajudeen provided firm and steady leadership to ensure that the reforms were evidence-based, inclusive, and aligned with Nigeria’s fiscal realities and development priorities. Throughout the process, Speaker Abbas consistently emphasised that tax reform must be anchored on clarity, fairness, and strict adherence to constitutional and parliamentary procedures.

He assured that: “These landmark legislations constitute the backbone of Nigeria’s contemporary tax reform architecture, designed to modernise revenue administration, improve compliance, reduce inefficiencies, eliminate duplication, and strengthen fiscal coordination across the Federation.”

In directing the release of the certified Acts, Speaker Tajudeen reassured Nigerians that the National Assembly remains an institution of records, guided by clearly defined rules, precedents, archival systems, and verification processes that safeguard the authenticity of every law enacted.

He said, “The National Assembly is an institution built on records, procedure, and institutional memory. Every Bill, every amendment, and every Act follows a traceable constitutional and parliamentary pathway.

“Once a law is passed and assented to, its integrity is preserved through certification and custody by the legislature. There is no ambiguity about what constitutes the law.”

Speaker Tajudeen further emphasised that the House would remain vigilant and proactive in defending the integrity of its work, clarifying that the only authentic and authoritative versions of the four tax Acts are those certified and released by the National Assembly.

He, therefore, urged members of the public, institutions, professionals, and stakeholders to disregard and discountenance any other documents or versions in circulation that are not certified by the National Assembly, as such materials do not form part of the official legislative record.

“Consequently, the Clerk to the National Assembly has concluded the process of aligning the Acts—duly passed, assented to, and certified, with the Federal Government Printing Press to ensure accuracy, conformity, and uniformity.

“Hard copies of the certified tax Acts have also been produced and are being circulated to all Honourable Members and Distinguished Senators, and made available to the public, to ensure institutional clarity, uniform reference, and legislative certainty.

“The House affirms that the work of the Ad-hoc Committee, chaired by Rt. Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, OON, continues in line with its mandate to determine the circumstances surrounding the circulation of unauthorised versions of the tax Acts and to recommend measures that will prevent a recurrence and preserve the authenticity and reliability of parliamentary records.

“The House of Representatives, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen reaffirms his unwavering commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law, transparency, and accountable governance.
