100 Days In Office: Security Experts Pass Verdict On Tinubu Govt

Published

on

As President Bola Tinubu marks his 100 days in office, some experts have expressed divergent views on the state of the country’s security situation.

DAILY POST reports that terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities were the major crisis bedeviling the nation prior to May 29 2023 when President Tinubu took over the mantle of leadership from his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.

While some experts are of the view that the wanton killing, kidnapping and other heinous activities perpetrated by the bloodthirsty assailants have drastically reduced, others are saying that nothing has changed so far.

Recall that in an effort to quell the age long security crisis ravaging the country, President Tinubu after a few days in office, overhauled the security architecture with new service chiefs.

Although the President’s action stimulated a new hope amongst Nigerians who were hitherto in despair over the havoc being wrecked by the daredevil terrorists and bandits, killings and abduction of unsuspecting citizens have continued.

The criminal elements are still on rampage in the Federal Capital Territory and other parts of the nation despite efforts of the new government to tackle the menace.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported in August that no fewer than 23 local government areas are controlled by bandits in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states.

More worrisome is the deteriorating situation in Sokoto and Zamfara states where residents are forcefully sacked from their ancestral homes, abandoning their various sources of livelihood.

DAILY POST gathered on Saturday that the security of lives and property in the eastern part of Sokoto State recently hit an all-time low as the criminal elements continued their killing sprees, kidnapping and maiming innocent members of the communities.

According to a source, Mr Muhammed Magaji, who is conversant with the ugly situation, the development has instilled fear in residents, especially those in Isa, Sabon Birni, Rabah, Goronyo, and Illela local council areas of the State.

Kaduna State has also been a den of the criminal elements with several abductions, killings occuring incessantly.

Recent among the numerous attacks was the incident that occurred on Thursday when the unscrupulous elements burnt down the parish house of Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of the State, killing a Seminarian in the process.

Locals, who witnessed the attack, said the miscreants in their large numbers stormed the Saint Raphael Parish at Fadan Kamantan, Kafanchan Diocese on Thursday night and set the building ablaze alongside a vehicle parked in the premises.

The perpetrators of the dastardly act causing mayhem across the country did not exempt the nation’s capital as bandits continued to terrorize parts of the city, particularly the satellite areas.

On Thursday, September 8, about 19 persons were kidnapped in the Bwari Area Council by gunmen yet-to-be identified.

The development was revealed during the maiden meeting between the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the six area council chairmen.

The Minister, who was concerned about the developments, said he would summon the FCT Director of Department of State Services, DSS, as well as the Commissioner of Police, to be comprehensively briefed about the kidnap incident and facilitate rescue operations.

Similarly, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Haruna G. Garba on Thursday paraded no fewer than 15 suspected criminals who were nabbed for various crimes, including murder and abduction across the territory.

DAILY POST reports that while the Southerners are enjoying relative peace, some states in the region including Rivers and Edo have been in the news following activities of suspected cultists.

Recall that armed men suspected to be cultists terrorizing parts of Rivers State on Friday night killed a Divisional Police Officer, DPO, identified as Bako Amgbanshin.

A viral video which surfaced on the Internet revealed how Angbanshin’s head, hand and his private part were cut off.

President of the Eagle Crime Awareness Prevention Initiative, ECAPI, Samuel Eniola Adam told DAILY POST on Saturday that the insecurity situation in the country has tremendously reduced.

Adams claimed that the crime rate in the country has in the last four months reduced from at least 100 to 50%, citing the level of killings prior to Tinubu’s assumption of office.

He said, “To me, the insecurity in Nigeria has so far reduced from at least 100 to 50%.

“Majority of the security crisis we faced during the past government has really gone down.

“Although we still have some elements causing trouble in the north, it cannot be compared to what Nigerians were facing during the past administrations.

“Go to the Southeast and you will understand what I’m saying. Kidnapping and other activities of the unknown gunmen have drastically reduced since the President took over the leadership of Nigeria.”

Mr Adams, however, admitted that the fight against insecurity would yield more positive results when the county’s economy is in good shape.

“I think the only thing that is affecting the society now is the economy. People are hungry and I believe that if the President can tackle the hardship problems, insecurity will be a thing of the past.

“My advice to Nigerians at the moment is to exercise patience. I am sure that by the time the economy is revived, every other thing will fall in place. I’m begging Nigerians to have patience; this is the only country we can call our own.

“It is better to prevent crime than fighting crimes. Economy is the problem in Nigeria. There are no jobs anywhere. The federal ministries and even the states have no employment going on and that is why our children are joining bad gangs to perpetrate evil.

“If the majority of the youths are engaged through employment, the general crime rate will be reduced to a minimum. Both adults and even children are now into internet fraud because there is no job.

“I don’t blame them, I blame both the government and the parents. Everybody wants their children to go to university whereas the highest qualification that is recognized in Nigeria is secondary school. With such certificates you can become governor and even president.

“Parents should encourage their children to acquire skills. If you have a skill, for instance, a fashion designer, you don’t need a job from the government. You will engage yourself and earn good money”, he added.

But a security analyst, James Adakole, who spoke to our correspondent in Abuja on Saturday, said nothing has changed since the President took over power.

He said, “I have not seen any change. Have the bandits stopped attacking innocent people? Has the killing in the Northeast stopped?

“Are the Fulani militias no longer killing people in Benue, Kogi and other states? Where is the change?

“Everyday we keep hearing of attacks, abductions, killings everywhere. The thing is, when people are unhappy, the crime rate automatically increases. Nigerians are not happy so the crime rate is increasing rather than reducing.

“Many people are now going into the business of kidnapping to survive. Yes, many of them refer to the crime as business. Yahoo boys are multiplying everyday and these boys are now into something else. They now use human life as a sacrifice to boost their crimes.

“So when people say the security has improved, I don’t understand. Maybe I will understand better when things begin to work well. When the cost of living reduces and Nigerians are happy.”

Adakole also pointed out that “the best way to tackle security problems is to improve the lives of the people. Many people are into what they naturally don’t like doing but they feel that is the only option for them.

“When the government puts up measures to better the lives of the citizens, people will change. You hardly hear of this security crisis in most developed countries and that is because things are easy for them.”

Head Of Mormon Church Is Dead

Published

on

Russell Nelson, who headed the Mormon church since 2018, died on Saturday night at age 101, the church announced.

“With sorrow we announce that Russell M. Nelson, beloved President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away peacefully… at his home in Salt Lake City,” it said in a statement, using the church’s official name.

The former heart surgeon was “the oldest president in the history of the Church,” the statement added, without specifying a cause of death.

Utah Republican senator Mike Lee lauded Nelson as a “bold, visionary leader prepared by God to testify of Jesus Christ in the very times in which we now live.”

Nelson became the 17th president of the Church in January 2018 at age 93, succeeding Thomas Monson.

Before becoming president, Nelson successfully pushed for the church to label same-sex married couples as “apostates” and bar their children under the age of 18 from religious rites, including baptisms — though that policy was scrapped after he took on the role.

He also broke with his predecessors and cautioned against using shorthands “LDS” or “Mormons” to refer to the church.

Nelson’s successor will be chosen after his funeral by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who like the church’s president are considered prophets by believers.

The religious leader is survived by his wife, eight of his children, 57 grandchildren and more than 167 great-grandchildren, according to the church.

Founded in 1830, the Mormon church considers itself a Christian body, but bases its doctrines on the Book of Mormon, a text purporting to contain a fuller version of the words of Jesus Christ than that recorded in the Bible.

US Lifts Restrictions On Visa Validity For Ghanaians, Leaves Nigeria’s Unchanged

Published

on

The United States has restored the maximum validity periods for all categories of nonimmigrant visas for Ghanaian nationals following Ghana’s agreement to accept West African deportees, but similar restrictions for Nigerians remain in place.

The B1/B2 visitor visa is now valid for up to five years, with multiple entries allowed, while the F1 student visa’s maximum validity has been restored to four years, with multiple entries permitted.

“The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that the maximum validity periods for all categories of nonimmigrant visas for Ghanaians have been restored to their previous lengths. The maximum validity allowed for the B1/B2 visitor visa is again five years, multiple entry. The maximum validity for the F1 student visa is again four years, multiple entry,” the U.S. Embassy announced in a tweet on Saturday.”

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Ablakwa, also announced in a tweet that the new policy now allows citizens to apply for five-year multiple-entry visas.

Ablakwa also stated that the reversal of the restriction comes with other enhanced consular privileges, adding that the development was the result of months of diplomatic engagement.

The U.S. visa restriction imposed on Ghana has been reversed. Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges,” Ablakwa stated.

This good news was directly communicated to me by U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, at a bilateral meeting earlier today, in the margins of the UN General Assembly. I am really pleased that months of high-level diplomatic negotiations have led to a successful outcome.”

These changes reverse earlier restrictions imposed under the Trump administration, which had limited most visas to single-entry and a three-month validity period.

The restrictions affected several African countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, and were based on concerns over visa reciprocity and the acceptance of deported migrants.

In July, the U.S. Consulate in Nigeria announced updates to its reciprocal nonimmigrant visa policy, stating: “The United States Department of State has announced updates to its reciprocal non-immigrant visa policy, impacting several countries, including Nigeria. Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period.

“Those U.S. non-immigrant visas issued prior to July 8, 2025, will retain their status and validity. We wish to underscore that, as is standard globally, visa reciprocity is a continuous process and is subject to review and change at any time, such as increasing or decreasing permitted entries and duration of validity. You can view the latest information on visa reciprocity schedules for all countries at travel.state.gov.”

Reports indicate that the U.S. pressured some African nations to accept deported migrants, including Venezuelan detainees from U.S. prisons.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar rejected these pressures, stating that Nigeria would not serve as a “dumping ground” for deportees.

It would be difficult for countries like Nigeria to accept Venezuelan prisoners into Nigeria,” Tuggar said during a televised interview.

We have enough problems of our own; we cannot accept Venezuelan deportees to Nigeria. We already have 230 million people.”

Meanwhile, Ghanaian President John Mahama confirmed that Ghana had begun accepting deported West African nationals after U.S. requests.

We were approached by the U.S. to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the U.S., and we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable,” Mahama said.

All our fellow West African nationals don’t need visas to come to our country.”

UK Nursery Worker Jailed For Abusing 21 Babies

Published

on

A judge on Friday jailed a nursery worker for eight years for a string of “gratuitous” and “sadistic” attacks on babies.

In one incident, Londoner Roksana Lecka, 22, kicked a little boy in the face several times.

Lecka, who blamed cannabis for her crimes, admitted seven counts of cruelty to a person under the age of 16 and was convicted after a trial of another 14 counts.

Sentencing her for attacks on 21 babies, Judge Sarah Plaschkes said she had committed “multiple acts of gratuitous violence” at two London nurseries where she worked.

You pinched, slapped, punched, smacked and kicked them. You pulled their ears, hair and their toes. You toppled children headfirst into cots,” she said.

“Often the child would be quietly and happily minding its own business before you deliberately inflicted pain… Your criminal conduct can properly be characterised as sadistic,” she added.

Lecka’s cruelty was revealed in June 2024 after she was seen pinching a number of children.
Police were called in and found multiple incidents recorded on the nursery CCTV.

Victim impact statements submitted to London’s Kingston Crown Court from parents of Lecka’s victims told how they were left heartbroken and guilt-stricken by the attacks.

“They couldn’t speak, they couldn’t defend themselves and they couldn’t tell us as parents that something had happened to them,” she added.

They were totally helpless and Roksana preyed upon them.”

The hearing was told that she had apologised to the parents in a letter to the court in which she said cannabis had turned her into a different person.

She had been addicted to the drug around the time of the offences, but had not told the nursery.
She was found not guilty of three further counts of child cruelty.
