ATBU Closes Down School Over Students’ Protest

Published

on

The management of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi has announced the closure of the school over students’ protest on Monday.

Mr Zailani Bappa, Director, Directorate of Information and Public Relations, ATBU, Bauchi, disclosed this in a news conference in Bauchi.

It will be recalled that the students staged a peaceful protest after one Joseph Baidu, a 500 level student of the Geology department of the Faculty of Sciences of the university was allegedly murdered outside the campus on Saturday night.

Bappa said that the decision to shut down the school for a period of one week was as a result of the fact that some groups of the agitating students decided to get the matter into their hands and started a demonstration while the police were still investigating.

This murder allegation did not happen on our campus and the record we have of such a student is that he lives outside the university campus in spite of the fact that he is a final year student.

“The duty of the university security is to report this issue to the police for proper investigation and this is exactly what happened and the police are currently investigating the issue.

“However, agitated students this morning decided to get the matter into their hands and some of the students decided to start a demonstration early this morning.

“It’s very unfortunate that after succeeding in trying to douse the situation inside the university, there were some group of students who decided not to surrender this issue to the police.

“Their agitation led to the level of where they wanted to create disorderliness within the university community and even went to the extent of not recognising the officials of the university who were there to calm them down,” he said.

According to him, this has led to a decision by the management to close down the university, adding that the students had already been directed to vacate all campuses of the university immediately.

The Information Director also said that any undergraduate student of the university found on any of the campuses would face the wrath of the law.

He, however, reiterated the commitment of the management of the university to address and redress the act of brigandage if the student was actually found to be murdered from the awaiting police report.
