Two policemen lost their lives Tuesday, September 1, and others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal accident Involving the convoy of former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
It was learnt that Oshiomhole was traveling to Usen in Ovia North East Area of Edo State to appear at a campaign rally of the APC in the community when a trailer driving in the same direction veered off its course, hit the back up Toyota Hilux vehicle carrying 7 policemen.
The accident occured some minutes past 12pm, around Oluku junction, Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.
A statement by Media Aide to Oshiomhole, Victor Oshioke, said convoy of the former national chairman was maintaining it lane with normal speed when the trailer driving in the same direction hit the convoy, adding that it was an assassination attempt on Comrde Oshiomhole.
“It is pertinent to state, without fear of contradiction, that the convoy of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was maintaining legal speed limits when this incident occurred. This explains why the trailer, travelling in the same direction over ran the Hilux truck off the road and still hit the SUV carrying Comrade Oshiomhole, causing substantial damage.
” Without prejudice to police investigations, eyewitnesses account of the incident suggest, and we believe rightly too, that this was an assassination attempt, targeting Comrade Adams Oshiomhole,” Oshioke statement reads.
While stating that Oshiomhole was not injured in the accident, the Media Aide called on the Police to investigate and unravel circumstances surrounding the accident.
He added, ” Finally we call on the security agencies to do everything possible to unravel the circumstances surrounding this incident, especially because of the threat to the life of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the violence which has been directed towards him and his those around him in recent times.”
Meanwhile the governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commiserated with the families of the victims of the crash and prayed that God grants them the fortitude to bear the loss of their loved ones.
Meanwhile, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has condoled Oshiomhole and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osagie Ize-Iyamu, over the accident.
In a statement, the governor commiserated with the families of the victims of the crash and prayed that God grants them the fortitude to bear the loss of their loved ones.
“I received the news of the accident with shock and commiserate with the former governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the candidate of the APC in the forthcoming governorship election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu over the very unfortunate incident involving their security aides and top chieftains of the party in the campaign team.
“While we pray for strength for the families of the deceased persons, we also pray for the quick recovery of those who were injured and are receiving treatment,” Obaseki prayed.
Recall some suspected armed robbers also blocked Obaseki’s convoy yesterday on his way to his campaign rally but were repelled by security operatives.
