A 46-year-old woman appeared before Chief Magistrate Patricia Igho-Braimah of Oredo Magistrates’ Court Benin for allegedly obtaining N1.4million under false pretence.
The defendant, Juliet Daudu is facing trial for a one count charge of obtaining goods under false pretence.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the one charge.
The police Prosecutor, ASP Osayomwanbor Omoruyi told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 23, 2008 at Ring Road, Benin.
Omoruyi alleged that the defendant, had on the said date obtained the Sum of N1.4million cash from one Pat West-Erhabor with the pretence of helping her to supply fairly used goods from abroad.
The prosecutor said the defendant had collected the money, she travelled overseas and refused to communicate with the complainant for 12 years till the defendant was arrested over the weekend.
Omoruyi said the offense contravened the provisions of section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap. 48 Vol. 11, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, now applicable in Edo State.
The Chief Magistrate therefore admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N250,000 with one surety in like sum adding that the surety must be from level 15 and above of Edo Civil Service.
