Edo Promises Effective PHCs In 192 Wards

The Edo state government said it is committed to ensuring effective Primary Healthcare Centres across all the 192 wards of the state.
The state deputy governor, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, said this during a federal government-backed supervision and inspection of the Oghede PHC in Ovia North-East Local Government Area.
The visit was part of an oversight function by Members of the House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare to assess the progress of the World Bank and Edo State Government-supported “IMPACT” Project — Immunization Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services.
According to a release by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Friday Aghedo, the deputy governor, said that the aim was to improve access to quality healthcare services, especially in rural areas
He added that it would also improve maternal and child healthcare services
Idahosa declared that governor Monday Okpebholo is committed to fulfilling this promise.
Speaking to his former colleagues in the Green chamber, Idahosa highlighted the administration’s focus on health reforms.

“The Monday Okpebholo led government is determined to deliver on its campaign promises, particularly in healthcare sector.
“The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole and other agency heads are working together for the good of Edo people,” he said.
Idahosa expressed satisfaction with the quality of work at the Oghede PHC, describing the facility as a model for other centres.
“I am very impressed with what I have seen here today. The prototype is good, the health workers are dedicated, and with the team we have in place, Edo people will be happy,” he noted.
He said that the state’s ongoing efforts at upgrading PHCs have significantly strengthened primary healthcare services across Edo.

He commended the Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare, Hon. Amos Gwamna Magaji, for his support, saying, “From what we are seeing here today, we are not just meeting expectations, we are ahead of the curve nationally.”
Magaji, who once chaired the committee before Idahosa’s transition to state politics, described the visit as “a meeting of fate.”
He said the committee’s oversight focused on evaluating the use of federal government and World Bank funds to improve health infrastructure across states.
“Our mandate is to oversee the basic healthcare provision fund and ensure states like Edo are well positioned to achieve universal health coverage by 2030.

He expressed satisfaction with the level of government participation and the quality of the Oghede facility, noting that it effectively serves vulnerable groups.
“Nigeria currently faces one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. To reverse this, PHCs must be well-equipped and staffed,” he stated.
He also called on residents to take advantage of health facilities within their communities, noting that the human resources are in place to serve them.
Providing further insight, Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole explained the classification of the “Level 2 PHC.”

According to him, “A Level 2 PHC is one that has two consulting rooms, a labour ward, an operating theatre, male and female wards, immunization areas, and staff quarters — all with access to electricity and water.”
He revealed that 61 such PHCs are being developed across the state; 21 in Edo South, 20 in Edo Central, and 20 in Edo North, and assured that construction would be completed within the next two weeks.
Project Manager of the IMPACT initiative, Dr. Idemudia Osayomore, added that the upgraded facilities would offer key services at no cost.
“Services are free for pregnant women, children under five, and the elderly above 65 years, in order to reduce maternal and child mortality,” he said.
The IMPACT Project, jointly funded by the Federal and Edo State Governments with support from the World Bank and the Edo Health Insurance Scheme (EDOHIS), aims to expand access to subsidized healthcare services and accelerate progress toward universal health coverage.

Okpebholo Pledges To Clear Inherited Salary Arrears, Gratuities At AAU

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has assured the management of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, of his administration’s commitment to addressing accumulated unpaid salaries, gratuities and other critical challenges inherited from past administrations.
In a statement, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, said the governor gave the assurance when he received the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor (Mrs.) Eunice Eboserehimen Omonzejie, and members of her management team on a courtesy visit to Government House, Benin City.
Okpebholo, who congratulated the Vice-Chancellor and her team on their appointments, noted that their presentation underscored the depth of challenges confronting the institution.
“From what you have outlined today, it is clear that Ambrose Alli University was on life support. I must commend the progress you have recorded so far since assuming the office,” the governor said.

“I am impressed by your efforts, and I want to assure you that in any way possible, this administration will support the university to reposition it and restore its lost glory.”
Addressing the issue of accumulated salary arrears, the governor described the non-payment of staff salaries over several years as unfair and unacceptable.
“It is not right for people to work and not be paid. The issue of unpaid salaries, pensions and gratuities running into billions of naira is something I will take as a project,” he said.
“These are issues inherited from the past government, and we will address them.”
Okpebholo also acknowledged other concerns raised by the university management, including hostel infrastructure, accreditation-related challenges and facilities required for programmes such as Medical Laboratory Science.

“This year’s budget is already at an advanced stage, but I expect that these critical needs will be properly captured in your budget proposals. Once that is done, we will see how best to move the institution forward,” he added.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Omonzejie, explained that the delay in paying a courtesy visit to the governor was due to a recently concluded accreditation exercise and the need to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the state of the university.
She noted that the university she inherited was in a moribund state, plagued by infrastructural decay, unpaid salaries and accreditation challenges, among others.

Omonzejie expressed profound appreciation to Governor Okpebholo for what she described as “life-saving interventions” since his assumption of office.
According to her, the governor’s approval of an increased monthly subvention, restoration of affected staff to the payroll, support for graduating backlog medical students, improved security logistics, and the facilitation of road construction through the Niger Delta Development Commission have significantly revived the institution.
She also formally presented pressing needs requiring urgent attention, including accumulated unpaid salaries, pensions, gratuities and union deductions, as well as the construction of lecture theatres and hostels to enhance accreditation and expand student intake, particularly in the College of Medicine.

I’m Not Distracted By Anti-Niger Delta Elements, Says PAP Boss, Otuaro

…says Tinubu satisfied with PAP’s scholarship scheme, stakeholders’ engagement, peacebuilding Process
The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dr Dennis Otuaro, has declared that his leadership will not be distracted by the “smear campaign of some anti-Niger Delta elements.
The PAP boss spoke at the flag-off of the fourth batch of the two-day ‘Leadership, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Mediation Training for PAP Stakeholders’ organised by the agency in collaboration with the Alumni Association of the National Defence College (AANDEC) at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, on Monday.
The PAP had in July and August 2025 successfully conducted a similar capacity-building workshop for three batches of its stakeholders at the same military facility.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr Igoniko Oduma, Otuaro said these Anti-Niger Delta elements are angry because the programme had been taken to the people of the region.
The PAP boss, who further declared that “nobody will hold the region to ransom,” disclosed that President Bola Tinubu is happy with the significant achievements recorded by the agency in the Niger Delta in less than two years.

Otuaro, who said the President is delighted with the agency’s expanded scholarship scheme, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and peacebuilding process in the Niger Delta, urged stakeholders to maintain their position as key players in the region’s peace and development.
According to him, His Excellency, President Tinubu is very supportive of the programme because of his strong desire for the region to enjoy sustainable peace, stability and development.
He reiterated that the workshop is a vital component of the PAP’s peace process with all stakeholders as important partners in the peace initiative.
He stressed that the participants are not only partners for peace, but also the President’s peace ambassadors.
The PAP boss also applauded the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for his strategic support to strengthen the programme’s initiatives and enable it to achieve the intended objectives for the people of the region.

While declaring the workshop open, Otuaro said, “His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, is very happy with what we have achieved so far in one year and nine months. As stakeholders, you should continue to be key players in the peace and development of the Niger Delta, which His Excellency has been very supportive of and desirous of.
“The objective behind this training is to ensure that all of us are partners in every peace effort in the Niger Delta. This initiative is also to give you a sense of belonging.
“When we organised this workshop in July and August this year, we assured stakeholders that more people would also participate in the training. We don’t want to do the PAP’s work alone. It is a process of putting our heads together to ensure that the region is peaceful and united. When we are united, Mr President will do more for the region.
“We must also realise that peace starts from our communities; you all are leaders in your own rights. I know and acknowledge the support that the Office has received since we came on board. This leadership workshop is part of our peacebuilding process and is designed to ensure that peace is sustained in our region.
“Since we came on board, we have redirected the Programme towards our people and for the next generation. We have achieved a lot. This 2025-2026 academic session, we have sent 4,500 students, our future leaders, on scholarships to universities within Nigeria. We are doing this to invest in the future of our region.”
He further urged stakeholders not to be manipulated by political merchants, but to massively support President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid because of his clear agenda for the region.
Otuaro enjoined the stakeholders to participate actively in the workshop and utilise the lessons they would gain to strengthen peace and development in their communities and the Niger Delta in general.
He also expressed appreciation to the management of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, resource persons, and the President of AANDEC, Rear Admiral Ndidi Agholor (retd.), for partnering with the PAP to deepen the peace process in the region.
